Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant
Location: Primary Special School, Sheffield (S8)
Contract: Full-time
Salary: £84 to £95 per day (dependent on experience)
Role
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant to join our team, supporting children with additional needs at a well-regarded Primary Special School in the S8 area of Sheffield.
This school caters to children aged 4 to 11 with a variety of special educational needs and disabilities, offering a nurturing and supportive environment to help them thrive. This role requires full-time availability, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, and the ability to travel to S8.
Responsibilities
- Support Learning: Assist in the delivery of personalised educational programmes to meet the individual needs of students.
- Individual and Group Support: Provide focused one-on-one or small group support to help students progress.
- Behavioural Support: Use positive reinforcement to assist in managing and improving student behaviour.
- Classroom Assistance: Work alongside the class teacher, preparing resources, setting up activities, and ensuring a safe and stimulating learning environment.
- Personal Care: Offer assistance with personal care needs where required, ensuring dignity and respect.
- Communication Support: Facilitate communication for students with language, communication, or sensory challenges.
- Observation and Reporting: Monitor and document student progress, sharing insights with teachers and parents as needed.
- Promote Inclusivity: Foster an inclusive learning environment where all students feel supported and valued.
Essential Criteria
- Experience: Prior experience working with children with special educational needs is highly desirable.
- Understanding of SEN: Familiarity with a range of SEN, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), learning difficulties, sensory impairments, and physical disabilities.
- Patience and Empathy: A calm, patient, and empathetic approach, with the ability to manage challenging situations sensitively.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills, enabling effective engagement with students, staff, and parents.
- Adaptability: Flexibility to meet the diverse needs of students in different learning environments.
- Team Player: A collaborative attitude, working closely with teachers, therapists, and other support staff.
- Reliability: A committed and dependable professional, passionate about making a difference in the lives of SEN students.
Qualifications
A relevant qualification in education, childcare, or a related field is preferred but not essential.
