Summary:
The Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) department is the Design Authority for each of Duke Energy's six nuclear sites. CDE is responsible for the execution of a fleet portfolio that includes design solutions supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization.
Responsibilities:
1. Develop the scope, technical basis, installation, and testing requirements for engineering design changes, which include but are not limited to Stress Analysis, Structural Analysis, Dynamic/Seismic Analysis, Steel and Concrete Design.
2. Research engineering and design issues, evaluates alternatives, determines, and presents recommendations to resolve issues.
3. Provide ongoing support of assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities.
4. Develop or revise design/procurement specifications or technical requirements documents to support engineering design changes.
5. Develop or revise complex engineering calculations impacted by engineering design changes.
6. Develop licensing screens and evaluations that support engineering design changes.
7. Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering design changes.
Basic Qualifications:
Nuclear Engineer III
1. Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
2. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
3. 4-6 years of engineering experience.
Senior Nuclear Engineer
1. Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
2. A Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
3. Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Bachelor of Science in Civil or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
2. Proficient in engineering theories and principles.
3. Proficient in principles of project management.
4. Experience in the utility industry.
5. State registration as a Professional Engineer.
6. Strong background in Mechanics of Materials.
7. Experience performing Finite Element Analysis.
8. Working Knowledge of Structural Analysis software (ANSYS, GTStrudl, or similar).
9. Experience with Dynamic/Seismic Structural Analysis.
10. Working level knowledge of Stress Analysis software programs (SuperPipe, AutoPipe, Caesar II).
11. Working knowledge of ASME Codes (examples: B31.1, Section III, Section IX, Section XI), AISC Steel Construction Codes (ASD, LFRD, and ACI Concrete Design Code).
12. Familiarity with Solidworks or equivalent 3D modeling software.
13. Experience with nuclear industry standard design process.
Specific Requirements:
1. Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience.
2. In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
3. Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
4. Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.
5. This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
6. Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
7. Occasional overnight travel.
Working Conditions:
1. Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
