Role Description
It’s an exciting time to join QinetiQ and we are always looking for great people to join our technical team. The primary focus of this role will be the delivery of hydrodynamic testing and design consultancy services to the UK Ministry of Defence and commercial customers. Areas of focus will be: model design and manufacture, resistance and propulsion experiments, cavitation experiments, and propulsor design. As part of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering group, there will be opportunities to be involved in ship and submarine stability, seakeeping, manoeuvring and control.
Role details
* Contract type: permanent - full time (37 hours per week)
* Location: QinetiQ Haslar Marine Technology Park, Haslar Road, Gosport
Key Accountabilities
1. Support the conduct of model tests in QinetiQ’s hydrodynamic facilities (towing tank, ocean basin and cavitation tunnel): Test & Evaluation Facilities (qinetiq.com) .
2. Conduct hydrodynamic simulations of ships and submarines in support of design and operation.
3. Conduct data analysis of model test and numerical simulation data.
4. Work with QinetiQ’s subject matter experts on the delivery of complex projects and on the reporting and presentation of results.
5. Participate in business support activities, including bidding and task planning, from a technical/engineering perspective.
6. Give technical presentations and talk knowledgably about the work conducted. Presentations will be primarily internally focussed but will include customer meetings.
Key Competencies
1. Knowledge of naval architecture and marine hydrodynamics.
2. Knowledge of data analysis, including experience of programming (Matlab, Python, etc.).
3. Knowledge of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) is desirable.
4. Good communication skills, both written and presentational, including the ability to exchange complex information.
5. Highly motivated, with a positive attitude and values of integrity, collaboration and performance.
6. Good team working, organisation and attention to detail.
7. Keen desire to develop and grow technical skills and understanding.
Experience & Qualifications
You will need an excellent understanding of engineering, equivalent to someone who has completed a BEng/MEng in Naval Architecture or Mechanical Engineering.
