Reporting to the CFO you will be responsible for leading the group’s finance function. This position offers a great balance between traditional financial responsibilities and working with the CFO and Executive team to develop new reporting, commercial KPIs, systems and processes for a highly commercial and growing business. It would likely suit a candidate who has ambitions to develop towards a future Finance Director position as the next role in their career.
As a member of the Senior Management team you must have sufficient experience and gravitas to ensure that finance is a trusted business partner for all key stakeholders in the business.
Main Purpose of Role
* Provide leadership to the company’s Finance function developing a motivated, high performing team.
* Provide support to the company Executive and Senior Leadership Teams to deliver on day-to-day activities, championing a service and support model from the finance team.
* Ensure an appropriate control environment with the right staff, processes and procedures to protect shareholder investment.
Role and Responsibilities
* Oversee all transactional finance including accounts payable and receivable, treasury, cash and banking
* Deliver all external financial compliance reporting and obligations including VAT, CIS, CITB, Aggregate Levy, confirmation certificates, annual financial statements.
* Curate all financial and non-financial information necessary to evaluate and measure the financial and commercial performance of the business. Establish timely reviews of current operating performance and proactively identify opportunities for revenue growth and/or cost control.
* Provide financial and commercial guidance and support during contract and pricing decisions within each division and head office. Ensure all investments are adequately appraised through appropriate methodologies.
* Manage budgetary control processes, ensuring that budgets are consistent with Company plans and maintained within agreed limits and shareholder agreements. Take responsibility for liquidity and treasury management including the provision of accurate and timely cash forecasting.
* Lead the annual business planning process, working with the executive team to identify and model strategic plans, cascading down into operational divisional and departmental budgets.
* Proactively review actual performance giving early warning of any adverse trends and anticipating issues that influence the Company’s current or future results, recommending mitigation options as appropriate.
* Review and recommend appropriate investment decisions for major capital projects both on existing sites and future sites.
* Maintain all banking, funding, audit and tax relationships.
* Manage any fund raising processes for major capital projects including assessment of their financial returns.
* Ensure appropriate policies across finance are in place and operational creating a strong corporate governance environment.
* Responsibility for Risk Management, including provision of regular risk reporting to the Executive team.
* Support the delivery of Company Secretarial responsibilities through inhouse and outsourced arrangements.
* Review business controls, develop and implement Best Practice across the company through a culture of continuous improvement.
* Ensure appropriate controls and compliance for high risk areas including, but not limited to Cash processes, credit card transactions, staff expenses
* Ensure PCI DSS compliance in conjunction with the IT department
Person specification
Essential Criteria
· Degree / Post grad in Finance or other related field
· Qualified Accountant holding ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification
· Significant financial management experience to include exposure to the whole finance function (AP, AR, taxation, treasury, FP&A, internal and external reporting)
· Genuine and motivational leadership skills, demonstrable record of developing strong teams
· Excellent analytical and mathematical acumen. Proficient with mathematical modelling techniques for scenario planning
· Highly developed management skills to motivate and develop a large team in a busy changing environment
· Excellent stakeholder engagement skills. Connects and builds strong relationships with others, demonstrates emotional intelligence and an ability to communicate clearly, collaboratively and persuasively
· Ability to work well in a fast-paced and collaborative team that is responsive and results-oriented. Able to prioritise and deliver under pressure.
· Ability to work with the operational business to identify how operational metrics translate into financial performance
· Willingness to ‘roll up your sleeves’ and deliver at a ‘doing’ level. This is not purely a management position, there are significant routine tasks requiring completion
· Emotionally intelligent
· Focussed and driven – you will not succeed in this role without a desire to take full ownership of the finance function and a commitment to drive continuous improvements
· Highly proficient in IT, with experience in optimising financial systems, processes, and controls, ideally with experience of automation and utilising emerging technologies
· Working knowledge of VAT
· Detailed understanding of good practice standard financial processes (P2P, S2C, R2R etc.)
Desirable Criteria
· Experience of working within the construction sector and a familiarity with NEC contracts
· An understanding of Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) tax obligations
· Experience of Payroll
· Experience of R&D tax credits
· Revenue recognition of construction contracts
· Good knowledge of best practice financial modelling techniques (investment appraisal, three statement model, cashflow forecasting models)
