The Value Stream Manager (VSM) is responsible for reducing the non-value added elements in the value stream and eliminating waste in the overall supply chain from start to finish, for a defined product family and for ensuring that the value stream meets or exceeds customer requirements. The VSM will also manage all the materials related functions including but not limited to Purchasing, Production Scheduling and Inventory Control.
Summary of Duties
1. Defining the product family by conducting product routing analysis and appropriate groupings
2. Ensuring that a current state value stream map is created of the end-to-end value stream(s)
3. Conducting fact-based analysis of the current state map(s)
4. Preparing an ideal state map showing what the value stream could look like in the long term
5. Preparing a future state map that uses lean techniques to eliminate waste and improve process value in the short to mid term
6. Leading and mobilising the people inside and outside of the value stream to enable the required changes (including customers and suppliers)
7. Leading the day to day activities within the value stream to ensure that current commitments are achieved while improvements are being made.
8. Managing the activities of the shop floor within their value stream, machining processing and assembly, under the direction of the Director of Operations and follow established procedures and approved processes
9. Manage the purchasing and inventory control functions of their value stream in order to meet on time delivery goals and other company metrics
10. Compile and maintain manual or computerised records such as material inventory, in process production reports and status and location of materials within the SAP/MRP system
11. Perform root cause analysis and resolve problems
12. Utilise Kanban and other lean manufacturing techniques to improve inventory turns and total working capital management
13. Work closely with other departments such as Engineering and Sales on new product development and other related projects
14. Reviews visual schedules and related information to co-ordinate the planning and forecasting of customer orders to meet shipments
15. Plan, schedule and co-ordinate departmental activities to fulfil sales orders, meet inventory requirements and deliver manufactured products in a timely fashion
16. Supervise all Value Stream members under their responsibility in both shifts
17. Supervise the shop floor through one or more Team Leaders
Daily standard work will include:
1. Gemba Walk
2. Arrange support requirements (Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, Materials)
3. Deal with all personnel issues
4. Review and respond to expedite requests (Y or N)
5. 2nd Gemba Walk
6. Deal with abnormalities
7. Check performance metrics at all cells in the value stream
8. Follow up on expedite requests
Weekly standard work which includes:
1. Gemba walk with the Director of Operations
2. Verify Team Leader adherence to standard work
3. Formal audit of standard work in one area
4. Review status of visual controls
5. Lead continuous improvement meeting
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Have thorough knowledge of all manufacturing methods, techniques and related equipment, including CNC machining
2. Be familiar with product construction and application
3. Have complete knowledge of production scheduling and shop operations
4. Be highly organised, self motivated and can work independently
5. Have strong leadership skills with excellent oral and written communication skills
6. Demonstrable competence in problem solving, team building, planning and decision making
7. Manage multiple tasks and priorities and easily adapt to changing situations
8. Be computer literate, particularly in shop floor control, production planning and inventory control systems.
9. Working knowledge of lean or TPS principles
10. High mix / Low volume machine shop experience
MINIMUM EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
Hold a recognised technical engineering qualification.
Demonstrate 5 – 10 years of progressive manufacturing experience and responsibilities of which the most recent 3 years must be in a supervisory capacity.
Requires broad technical and administrative experience in a manufacturing machine shop environment.
