About Cocoon: Cocoon is creating a low-carbon cement substitute for the builders of tomorrow. Our patent-pending process captures CO2 and upcycles by-products from steel manufacture into a cement alternative (also known as a supplementary cementitious material or SCM). We are on a mission to make steel greener and cement cleaner. In the next 40 years, we will witness the construction of double the amount of infrastructure as there is in the world today, equivalent to a new Manhattan every month. Much of this infrastructure is crucial to the energy transition, catering to migrating populations, and achieving sustainable development goals. Steel and cement are integral to this construction, yet they contribute 15% of global emissions. Cocoon is committed to addressing the climate emergency by decarbonizing these crucial industries, paving the way for a better future for all. Our core technology involves manipulating molten steel slag to produce desired cementitious properties. We are seeking a cement chemist to lead our research and development programme, allowing us to develop a highly efficient, cost effective and scalable process. We are a small but formidable team, backed by world-class and global investors in climate, hardware and industrial decarbonisation. Responsibilities: Join our dynamic team and play a pivotal role in developing our supplementary cementitious material. You will be guiding part of our research and development programme and leading on regulatory pathways to get our novel material to market. Working with the CSO to develop a clear understanding of the SCM and how it behaves in cement and concrete Getting hands on in the lab, carrying out the research programmes you’ve created with help from a dedicated team of chemists and material scientists Engaging with key stakeholders in construction to build relationships and progress towards pilot use cases and offtake agreements Collaborating with the commercial team to get our product to market and inform on use cases Working with the science team to produce technical papers for consumption by the scientific community About you We want to build Cocoon with ‘hands-on’ scientists who can wear multiple hats, demonstrating ability in both the laboratory and downstream data analysis. The perfect candidate will be comfortable working at the cutting edge of novel cementitious materials and be motivated to push the envelope of current understanding. You will have a wealth of experience characterising and quantifying cementitious reactions, and will be familiar with the regulatory journey associated with bringing a novel SCM to market. If you possess the following qualifications/qualities, we would love to hear from you: 3 years industry experience minimum and PhD experience preferable Have devised and conducted successful research plans that yielded high quality outputs Familiar with laboratory techniques related to cement and concrete testing (isothermal calorimetry, TGA, XRD), including research related to slag cement activation/ admixtures Strong critical thinking skills with a methodical approach to problem-solving Willingness to work in a fast-paced and dynamic startup environment, where research aims and hypotheses may change on an experiment to experiment basis Bonuses: Experience modelling cementitious reactions (e.g., using PHREEQC) Familiarity with the journey to first use case. Knowledge of the technical requirements engineers and other key stakeholders require to build confidence in the product Join us on our exciting journey as we work together to shape the future of our company and make a meaningful impact on tackling the climate crisis. How We Work: As a company building hardware, we require the team to be in HQ (office/engineering/lab space) the vast majority of time. For some roles, remote working may make sense 1-2 days a week and this is something that can be discussed during the application process. We will always try to accommodate alternative working hours to suit individuals. Compensation: Base salary £75,000 - 85,000 per annum depending on experience, plus stock options Cocoon is an equal opportunities employer. We embrace diversity as a core value and commit to providing equal opportunities for all employees, job applicants, clients, and customers, irrespective of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, or any other protected characteristic. We regularly review our policies, provide training, and encourage open dialogue to ensure a supportive and inclusive workplace for all.
