About the Role : This position offers an exciting and challenging opportunity to experience multiple areas of international trade. The Department will be handling in excess of 40,000 TEU containers a year and offers a challenging and varied working environment. There are opportunities for future progression for those individuals who demonstrate they have the drive, skill and ability. The Import department is a challenging environment, having to work within tight procedures and deadlines, as well as managing many external pressures at the same time. The role will suit someone who enjoys a challenge, likes problem solving and who works best when under pressure. This position focuses on customs clearance, import/export, and customs warehouse processes. Key Responsibilities: Handle a high-volume of custom clearance tasks and daily queries. Prepare and maintain daily, weekly, and monthly Excel reports. Verify the accuracy of customs clearance instructions and shipping documentation. Monitor and update pre-shipment status for high-risk/special flagged containers (e.g., food, pet food, dangerous goods). Assist in preparing for HMRC audits. Communicate and follow up on urgent matters by phone and email. Submit DEFRA/IPAFFS CHEDP notifications as needed. Manage queries from Port Health, Customs, and Border Force. Track CFSP/Customs Warehouse UCR assignments and ensure data flow integrity. Conduct HMRC compliance checks, including CFSP/Customs Warehouse procedures. Complete customs warehouse month-end reporting. Provide shipping updates to compliance and trading teams. Support the broader business, suppliers, and agents with inquiries. Input and monitor data on the company’s bespoke intranet system. Reconcile monthly HMRC deferment, PVA statements, MSS reports, and customs warehouse data. Perform general administrative tasks and monitor customs email inbox. Person Specification: Strong interest in customs clearance, shipping, or related processes (full training provided). High attention to detail, with consistent accuracy in work. Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks independently. Strong communication skills for effective email and phone interactions. Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure. Quick learner, adaptable, and able to manage multiple tasks. Confident with IT systems, especially Microsoft 365 and online platforms. Proficient in Excel (including formulas, pivot tables, and lookups); intermediate-level skills are essential, with the possibility of an Excel test during the hiring process.
