RMS (Research & Medicine Development Supply Statistics) is the functional home for a large group of statisticians, as well as the driver of statistical integrity across a large part of GSK’s R&D business. Within RMS are the statisticians who support the Research Tech platforms (small & large molecule discovery, oligo research, human genetics & genomics and many more) and the Biology Units within the Research Units; the CMC statisticians who support the work of MDS; translational statisticians who support both the translational science and medicine groups within the Research Units and Precision Medicine; some of our early development portfolio. In addition to deep technical and subject matter expertise in the broad area of non-clinical and translational statistics, the role holder will need to have advanced and sophisticated communication and influencing skills in order to drive a strongly data-driven culture in Research and MDS, with statistical thinking at its core. Reverse translation is at the heart of GSK’s R&D strategy, and so a willingness to take on technical and thought leadership in this area, building strong and action-oriented alliances with the translational science and medicine functions, will be key, as will a willingness to champion the re-use of internal and external data assets to maximise portfolio value. Key Responsibilities: Accountable statistician for Research Tech, MDS and the relevant components of the three Research Units. Represent Biostatistics on the relevant RU Technical Review and Investment Boards, providing an authoritative voice to examine the evidential basis for specific decisions, as well as to uphold the rigour of the quantitative framework for the decision-making process itself. Ensure that all RU and RTech work – in vitro & in vivo models, CIVM, translational science and medicine – is conducted to the highest degree of statistical integrity. Have a strong partnership with quantitative scientists within AIML, Human Genetics, CPMS, Biostatistics. Experience in the implementation of the Bayesian paradigm, is highly desirable. Develop and maintain nimble organizational models to optimize resourcing of the RMS portfolio of work, ensuring all relevant groups within Research and MDS have statistical support to deliver their key objectives. Lead the build of GSK’s (multimodal) biomarker development and validation strategy. Provide senior leadership, vision, management and direction to the RMS groups, and develop a strong leadership team who are positioned to influence statistical thinking, experimental design, inference and decision-making. Ensure that the statistical methods promoted by RMS group are at the cutting edge of the industry; build internal capability and external relationships to ensure such an outcome. Satisfy the in vivo regulatory obligations across Pharma R&D, ViiV and Galvani. Basic Qualifications: PhD in Statistics. Experience across the component functional groups within Research Tech, the Research Units and MDS. Technical experience in preclinical statistics, including research and CMC, and early phase/translational clinical development. International reputation in basic and/or applied statistical methodology, publication record in scientific journals with expertise in both Bayesian and frequentist statistics. Management experience in pharmaceutical/biotechnology and/or academia. Experience managing and/or implementing change projects with a record of achievement. Experience in the statistical, regulatory, and scientific landscapes. Leadership experience in a highly-matrixed environment Preferred Qualifications: PhD in Statistics with relevant post-doctoral positions/training Business acumen - understanding implications of decisions from a broad business perspective and uses this knowledge to influence decision-making at the highest levels of R&D. A track record of effective leadership in a variety of roles including interfacing with partner groups to shape the business and drive business improvement / create value. Broad appreciation of the drug discovery / development process and a proven ability to bridge disciplines to influence and shape decision-making and culture. A strong sense of initiative, urgency, drive, pragmatism and judgement – an ability to make things happen. Have external statistical presence and a strong network across the industry. A champion of effective, novel methodologies. Detailed knowledge and understanding of GSK R&D, people, structure, decision-making processes, business objectives and strategy. Proven ability to deliver to demanding deadlines whilst maintaining the highest quality. Effective influencer of many different personality types across all levels of seniority. Proven ability to develop skills and capabilities, with demonstrated leadership in the application of innovative approaches with portfolio-level impact.
