Our Defence and Security provide design and engineering services for our nuclear and defence clients across the UK and abroad. About the Opportunity
We are looking to recruit and develop career minded people to bolster our well-established long term and growing multi-discipline engineering delivery capability to meet opportunities in the nuclear and defence industries. Our projects include developing solutions in highly regulated environments, in support of air, land and sea defence establishments, the UK nuclear submarine fleet, and both existing and new build nuclear power stations.
You will preferably have experience of working in the nuclear and/or defence industries, but also those with relevant industrial design and design management experience looking to work in a technically challenging environment are welcome to apply.
Job Summary
The Senior Design manager is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all design activities, ensuring compliance with strict regulatory and security requirements.
The role requires managing multidisciplinary teams ensuring design integrity, and maintaining seamless collaboration between engineering, construction and stakeholder teams to deliver a high security, high specification facility.
The Senior Design Manager shall be responsible to ensure the design complies with regulations, standards and the projects objectives whilst optimising constructability and efficiency.
This is a hybrid role with 3 days based in the office / site technical office.
Responsibilities:
1. Manage and coordinate the design team from developed design through to detailed design.
2. Ensuring alignment between multi discipline design teams working on interdependent design packages.
3. Working closely with design team and project managers to assess and implement design change arising from client instructions.
4. Support supply chain liaison, procurement and construction activities i.e. technical queries, change management etc.
5. Ensure that design deliverables are submitted in line with contract requirements (technical / scope / cost / quality / schedule).
6. Identify and implement appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
7. Implement quality control procedures for design deliverables.
8. Address design related issues that arise during construction.
Essential Qualifications & Experience:
1. Degree qualified Engineer or demonstrable equivalent underpinning knowledge and understanding and discipline relevant professional experience.
2. Ideally Membership of an appropriate Institute.
3. Proven experience in managing multi-discipline engineering teams in multi-office locations.
4. Good all-round technical design experience using British and international standards and Eurocodes.
5. Ability to work autonomously and manage the design team’s time and workload to deliver against agreed milestones.
6. Ability to work effectively as a team leader within a multidisciplinary team liaising directly with team members and the Client.
7. Good verbal and written communication and technical writing skills.
8. A proactive problem-solving background with proven track record of project delivery.
9. Proven people skills and the ability to foster excellent working relationships with team members and the Client.
10. UK National (non dual citizen).
