Senior Clinical Fellow in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
This post is for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (Equivalent to ST4+ trainee / registrar). This is an 8 month fixed term (80%) post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey & West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
The successful candidate will be expected to have full GMC registration at the time of application.
Due to the imminent requirement to fill this post, the successful candidate must hold full registration with the GMC and have existing right to live and work in the UK, at the time of application. Candidates who are not GMC registered or do not hold existing right to live and work in the UK, at the time of application will not progress through the shortlisting stage.
Candidates must have at least 2 years UK experience working on Tier 2 Middle Grade Rota; applicants who do not have this experience will not progress through to the shortlisting stage.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will join a team of 20 Consultants within the directorate who currently provide services for General Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Feto-maternal Medicine, Urogynaecology, Menstrual disorders, Menopause, Subfertility, Outpatient hysteroscopy, Colposcopy and Gynaecological Oncology. The directorate is supported by 8 SAS Doctors, Specialty Trainees ST3+ and 13 Junior Doctors.
The Obstetrics & Gynaecology Directorate is based at Whiston hospital with some outpatient services and day surgery at St Helens Hospital. Outpatient hysteroscopy/PMB, colposcopy and urodynamics clinics are at St Helens hospital.
It would be expected that any successful candidate would take an active role in the service provision of the Department. In addition, they would be expected to actively participate in education and audit; the trust has a well-established audit unit to support this. The exact timetable will vary depending on the individual doctor’s skills and training requirements. The core sessions of Antenatal clinic, Gynaecology clinic, Labour Ward, and Theatre will form the basis of the rota with additional service and educational session.
On calls will be included in working schedules.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Department Facilities
The Obstetrics & Gynaecology Directorate is based at Whiston Hospital with some outpatient services and Day surgery at St Helens hospital. The directorate currently delivers over 4000 babies per annum. All services are provided in the directorate and are all consultants led including satellite clinics at Runcorn, Widnes, Newton and Haydock. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has 15 cots, is level 2 and is housed adjacent to the Delivery suite, and currently undertakes care of neonates from 27 weeks gestation. The Directorate is committed to expanding the role of the midwife. There is an excellent level of co-operation between the Doctors (at all levels), Midwives and Nurses in the unit that ensures that the quality of care delivered is optimal at all times.
The directorate has an active Quality and Safety team. There is a dedicated Quality and Safety Matron and a Risk Management midwife. The directorate has achieved NHSLA (CNST) level 3 accreditation.
The directorate has an obstetric day unit - fetomaternal assessment unit (run by midwives) that provides computerised CTG assessment, blood pressure profiles, scanning facilities and blood assessments. The unit is led by the fetomaternal consultant who scans high risk pregnancies and carries out amniocentesis.
Gynaecology
General gynaecology is provided by all 20 consultants. All aspects of gynaecology services are provided including minimal access surgery.
The Urodynamic Service is led by a consultant. There are dedicated consultant sessions and a dedicated ultrasound scan in the unit with facilities for transvaginal scanning. Time is allocated for SpR and medical student training in the unit.
Job Plan – Example
The post will involve work in Gynaecology outpatient clinics, antenatal clinics, delivery suite, obstetrics and gynaecology theatres. Special interest sessions will be encouraged and provided as far as possible depending on skills and completed ATSMs or equivalent. On calls will be included in working schedules.
Teaching & Training Responsibilities
The post will include a requirement to be involved in the teaching of junior staff, including those preparing for examinations such as MRCOG and DRCOG as well as teaching medical students from Liverpool University.

Research & Audit Responsibilities
Involvement in audit will be expected and encouraged. The trust has a well-established audit unit to support this.

Qualifications
* Applicants must be eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of application
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* Further Higher Degree CCT/CESR or equivalent
* MRCOG or equivalent medical qualification
Clinical Experience
* Completed 4 years full time post graduate training (or equivalent if part time) at least 2 of which shall be in a specialty training programme in the specialty
* Experience of a broad range of medical/surgical specialties
* Experience of Obstetrics & Gynaecology as a specialty trainee or has equivalent experience and competencies.
* Participated on/experience of 2nd/3rd on call in Obstetrics & Gynaecology
* Evidence of achievements of ST1/ST2 competencies or equivalent relevant to Obstetrics & Gynaecology
* Evidence of competence to manage Obstetrics & Gynaecology emergencies through continuous work-based assessments, portfolio evidence, including log book documentation, if appropriate
* Experience & ability to manage junior medical staff
* RCOG ATSM or Equivalent and demonstrable experience including that relating to a special interest, Intermediate US skills module, LW ATSM, ATSM in acute gynaecology, advanced antennal practice, ambulatory gynaecology, colposcopy or similar
Teaching Experience
* Ability to teach clinical skills to Junior Doctors
