Widener University is seeking a lab technician for the School of Engineering. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Engineering, this role will be part of a team of lab engineers and technicians that supports various instructional and research engineering laboratories, and outreach and recruitment activities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to) :
Essential duties:
1. Operate and maintain a variety of machine shop equipment, including lathes, mills, CNC machines, and welding equipment.
2. Assist faculty and students with the design, fabrication, and modification of mechanical components and prototypes.
3. Provide technical support and training to students and staff in the use of machine shop tools and equipment.
4. Ensure safety compliance by enforcing machine shop safety protocols and conducting regular equipment inspections.
5. Manage inventory of materials, tools, and supplies, and coordinate with vendors for purchases and repairs.
6. Assemble, set up, and calibrate instruments and supplies in assigned engineering labs.
7. Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment in assigned labs.
8. Assist faculty and students in laboratory classes and to train, assist and supervise students on how to operate equipment.
9. Support engineering outreach and recruitment activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):
Required:
10. Associate’s degree in a technical field and two years of relevant experience in engineering or a similar field.
11. Experience with engineering testing equipment.
12. Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
13. Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software.
14. Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
15. Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision on multiple tasks.
16. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
17. Strong organizational and time management skills.
Preferred:
18. Bachelor’s degree in the engineering field.
19. Previous experience in engineering laboratories.
20. Experience with machine shop operations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS:
21. May be required to work on weekends and evenings.
22. Must be able to stand, sit, bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach, and climb ladders.
23. Ability to lift objects weighing up to 35 lbs.
24. Ability to work on computers.
