We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Specialist Clinical Lead (SCL) with qualification as a Mental Health Nurse to join our partner services on a secondment basis. This role is for 12 months with potential extension to 18 months.
This role is part of a collaborative initiative between Essex University Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (EPUT), RAMA (Refugee and Migrant Action), and Colchester City Council. The primary focus is to support asylum seekers and newly granted refugees residing in Colchester by providing integrated and holistic mental health care.

Patient-Centred Care:
• Place families and individuals at the centre of all care activities, ensuring that services are tailored to meet their unique needs
• Develop personalised care plans that respect cultural, social, and personal contexts
• Create a welcoming and inclusive environment where clients feel safe and supported
Mental Health Support:
• Conduct thorough mental health assessments, including psychological, emotional, and social evaluations
• Provide and develop treatment plans that may include therapy, counselling, and medication management in liaison with other partners and services
• Offer intervention and management for individuals experiencing acute mental health episodes
• Utilise evidence-based practices to deliver therapeutic interventions that address trauma, anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions common among refugees and asylum seekers
Outreach Services:
• Design and implement outreach strategies to engage with clients in various community settings, including homes, community centres, shelters and Homes of Multiple Occupation
• Provide education and support to clients and their families about mental health issues and available resources
Referrals and Liaison:
• Act as a liaison between RAMA, EPUT, Colchester City Council, and other health and social care providers
• Coordinate referrals to specialist services, ensuring that clients receive comprehensive and continuous care
• Maintain strong communication channels with all stakeholders to facilitate integrated care pathways
Barrier Reduction:
• Identify and address barriers to healthcare access faced by refugee and asylum-seeking populations, such as language barriers, cultural misunderstandings, and logistical challenges
• Develop and implement strategies to improve healthcare access and reduce health disparities
• Advocate for clients within the healthcare system to ensure their needs are met and their rights are respected
Collaboration:
• Work collaboratively with local health services, community organisations, and other stakeholders to enhance service delivery and support networks
• Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings, case conferences, and other collaborative forums to discuss client care and coordinate services
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with partners to promote holistic and integrated care approaches
Education and Training:
• Provide training and support to other healthcare professionals, community workers, and volunteers on mental health issues relevant to refugees and asylum seekers
• Stay current with developments in mental health care, particularly as they relate to refugee and asylum-seeking populations, through continuous professional development
• Share knowledge and best practices with colleagues to improve overall service delivery and client outcomes

Core Non-Clinical Function
· Support and facilitate multi-disciplinary clinical meetings to ensure flow and capacity across the health and social care economy
· In conjunction with the Clinical Manager, take a lead role in clinical service development and review
· Identify aspects of the service which need to be improved and implement appropriate changes in conjunction with the Clinical Manager
· Participate with the Clinical Manager for the recruitment of employees in accordance with Trust Recruitment Policy and NHS Safer Recruitment Guidelines. Ensure that appropriate corporate and departmental Induction is undertaken immediately following appointment and that staff records that are retained are accurate and up-to-date
· In conjunction with the Clinical Manager, work within the available budget of the service and attend regular Performance Management meetings
· Provide clinical leadership and professional expertise to the team
· Work closely with and assist the Clinical Manager with development and implementation of operational / clinical policies contributing to the formulation and review of appropriate policies
· Deliver training where appropriate for other professionals
· Lead the Team in the evaluation and monitoring of service in conjunction with the Clinical and Operational Service Manager
· Provide clinical expertise and support to the Commissioning Panels (Health & Social Care)
· Participate in SI investigations, disciplinary and grievance procedures plus any relevant investigations in line with Trust policies
· Manage the capability process as necessary
· Ensure that the service through the implementation of performance management, all key performance indicators and targets identified by the Trust are met, and adhere to local and government initiatives
· Responsible for the coordination and management of the team in providing a safe, effective and therapeutic clinical service, ensuring the delivery of high quality community mental health care packages
· Work in conjunction with the Area Chief Nurse to promote the Trust’s Nursing Strategy
· Work in conjunction with the Allied Health Professions Leadership team to promote and support the AHP Strategy
Management Responsibility
You will be expected to support the work of the Clinical Manager in managing the performance of the service. This will include financial and resource management, operational planning, clinical governance, scheduling the delivery of the service and workforce planning.
