Are you ready for a new challenge? Are you ready to deal with a different call every time? Can you be that calming voice to someone in their hour of need? If so, we are now recruiting for Police Emergency Call Handlers.
This advert is for successful candidates to be added to a pool of future recruits that will be offered the role as and when vacancies arise and courses are planned. Current courses are scheduled for 21st July 2025 and 4th November 2025; however, these are subject to change or removal if the vacancies are not there.
Priority will be given to the highest scorers as part of the interview stage.
The training for this role is six weeks classroom-based, working Monday to Friday at Mansfield Police Station. The second six weeks will be days and afternoon shifts, Monday to Fridays, in the Control Room at FHQ, where you will start to take live calls under supervision. You must be available for the entire 12 weeks as this is a core requirement of training for this role.
Main Purpose of Role: To answer emergency and non-emergency calls from the public and other agencies, ensuring that calls are dealt with appropriately and comply with policies and procedures.
Upon successful completion of your probationary period, there will also be opportunities to develop further into the role of Police Dispatcher.
Key Skills & Experience Required:
To enable you to become effective in the role, you must be able to communicate effectively, make decisions using your own initiative, and manage your own levels of stress. You must be able to work as part of a team and have experience of, or an ability to deal with members of the public over the phone who may at times be upset or angry.
You must be able to work a rotating shift pattern and unsociable hours over a 24/7, 365-day period, for which you will be paid a shift and weekend working allowance.

If you are successful at the shortlisting stage, you will be invited to a work-based test, where you will need to be able to type a minimum of 30 words per minute, have a good grasp of spelling, and be able to demonstrate good accurate keyboard skills along with the ability to converse on the telephone and record information at the same time. Reasonable adjustments can be offered at the testing stage, subject to need.
This work-based test is currently scheduled for around week commencing 10th March 2025, and interviews will follow approximately 2 to 3 weeks after.
Vetting Level: Recruitment - you must have resided in the UK for at least the last 3 years.
