Job purpose The Materials Group is responsible for supporting internal and external customers in the development and manufacturing of current and future diesel and hydrogen products. This includes materials testing and inspection using a wide range of analytical and materials testing techniques including FIB/SEM, surface roughness profilometry, nano-indentation and tribometer. The student will work as integral part of our materials team and will be involved in relevant research and customer related projects Key Responsibilities Failure analysis of components from aggravated testing. Mechanical testing activities (e.g. fatigue testing, hardness testing, tribological testing). Materials analysis and measurement (e.g. SEM/EDX, optical microscopy, surface roughness measurement) Chemical testing and analysis (e.g. FTIR, Lubricity, Raman spectrometry). Record test data, analyse results and produce technical reports for internal and external customers. To conduct literature reviews and provide appropriate summaries. Technical assistance to the Materials team. Sample preparation; including cutting, polishing, mounting. What we’re looking for SKILLS Mandatory: Some understanding of metallic and non-metallic materials, properties, characterisation, and processing from degree course. Ability to apply the skills and knowledge learnt on course to date. Good personal and presentation skills, to enable liaison with internal customers. Ability to work methodically and take initiative in improving established processes. Analytical and problem-solving skills, self-motivated and able to plan and manage own projects. Current IT knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point. Good written and spoken fluency in English. Desirable: Able to operate effectively in a multi-national multi-lingual project environment. Ability to work under pressure and manage several tasks at once. Experience of using MATLAB is desirable but not essential. QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE Mandatory: Working towards a Degree (or equivalent) in Materials Engineering/Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering or related subject.
