North Wales Wildlife Trust are seeking a Garden Escapers and Nature Reserve Assistant placement to support delivery of the Garden Escapers project (two days a week) and assist our conservation staff (three days a week).
You will be a current student or recent graduate, who is reliable, responsible, motivated and able to use initiative. We would expect IT skills and that you are comfortable with engaging with the public and working outdoors in all types of weather. You will be a great communicator, with a personable style who can work with many different people across the wonderful variety of geography, business development, and activities of the Wildlife Trust.
North Wales Wildlife Trust are offering an exciting placement opportunity which has two aspects:
1. Support delivery of the Garden Escapers project (two days a week) which aims to engage with gardeners and key stakeholders in North West Wales to raise awareness of the impacts of invasive species and solutions for gardeners. This aspect will involve public engagement and working with key stakeholders such as garden centres and local authorities to explore which invasive and potentially invasive species are threatening protected sites.
2. Assist our conservation staff (three days a week) with the management of our nature reserves across North Wales with a main focus on the counties of Anglesey, Conwy and Gwynedd. Tasks will include habitat management, e.g. scrub clearance using hand tools and brush-cutters; control of invasive non-native species such as Himalayan Balsam and non-native cotoneaster; post & wire fencing; wildlife survey & monitoring work and helping out at wildlife-themed public events and activities. The placement includes the opportunity to attend relevant training courses, e.g. brush-cutter, chainsaw, First Aid, etc. up to the value of £1500.
Jobs at environmental NGOs now often require not only evidence of practical land management skills e.g. with using a brush-cutter, but also evidence of communication and engagement skills. This placement provides a fantastic opportunity to develop such a range of skills.
This is a new placement which will evolve following your appointment so you should be excited by the flexibility and opportunities to take an innovative approach. Note that the successful candidate will be expected to be based in or near Bangor for the duration of the placement (i.e. it cannot be done remotely) and a full driving licence is essential.
