We are recruiting for a Works Manager to join our Earthworks delivery team based in Maple Cross. The role is to control and manage the earthworks, drainage and landscaping works of the South Portal and Colne Valley Viaduct. Please note this role will be a FTC until the end of September as a minimum.
Purpose of the job
The Works Manager is responsible for overseeing the work on site on a day-to-day basis to ensure a smoothly run job site throughout the workday and due to a vision of the works a week ahead.
The Foreman helps to create and maintain a safe and healthy working environment, motivating the workforce ensuring efficiency and productivity in achieving the project targets.
Responsibilities
* Management of tradesmen and subcontractors on site.
* Lead by personal example and consistently set high standards of health and safety performance and behaviour.
* Ensuring works on site meet the agreed programme and are carried out safely with due regard to the protection of the workforce, public and the environment.
* Ensure that the various HSE guidance and procedure specific to site are followed and implemented.
* Be familiar with the RAMS of the work supervised and be able to detect any shortfall and deviance and correct it
* Report all accidents, incidents, near misses to the line manager or SHEQ manager as appropriate.
* Quality checks of the work supervised in accordance with the ITP and WIR.
* Carry out weekly site audits.
* Understand the Align site emergency procedures which include fire, first aid and evacuation.
* Ensure that the plant and equipment selected is suitable for use, safe for use and maintained and in line with the ALIGN and HS2 procedures.
* Support and promote a positive safety culture by reporting any unsafe situations or circumstances.
* Use relevant channels for reporting safety issues, near misses and general issues and encourage others to do the same.
* Proactively co-operate and co-ordinate with the supervisors and subcontractors whom it is necessary to interface with on site.
* Carry out daily task briefings.
* Ensuring that those carrying out the works are aware and accurately informed about the risks and the control measures associated with their works.
* Understand and implement the Align sites rules and procedures.
* Ensure the correct paperwork is in place before the start of each activity to ensure that checks are made on the following:
* Risk assessments are current and relate to the proposed activity.
* The operators are engaged and understand the risks and control measures associated with the activity.
* Where there are minor changes to the working environment, hazards are identified, control measures understood and implemented.
* Ensure that plant and equipment is use by only those who have received adequate information, instruction and training.
* Promote the occupational health services available on the project to your team.
* Ensure that the operators are medically fit for their role.
* Avoid manual handling where practicable; assess the risk associated with manual handling activities that cannot be avoided.
* Actively encourage feedback from the team (promoting the Aligns Safety Observation Reporting (SOR) Cards) and taking appropriate action where necessary.
* Identify those within the team that work safely and recognise them for it.
* Attend role specific sustainability training to raise individual awareness and understanding of the economic impact
* Provides input for the continual improvement within the Engineering and Technical services function and shares lessons learned and best practice with the construction industry to improve performance.
* Identifies cost saving opportunities and reports these to line manager.
* Facilitating the selection and delivery of Toolbox talks.
* Participate to the Black Hat Meeting
* Housekeeping of the working area, removal of waste in accordance with the site waste management plan.
* Supervision and management of the designated scope of works in terms of personnel, time, equipment and safety.
* Coordination of the works requirements through staff working in your area of responsibility and ensure they are kept informed of production programme deadlines, targets and changes etc.
* Reporting all issues to the Senior Works Manager
Skills & Experience
* Key experience gained as a General Foreman/Works Manager with experience in remediation, drainage & earthworks
* Must have a good working knowledge of English, both written and verbal.
* Demonstrable computer IT skills and Microsoft Packages (Outlook, Word, Excel).
* SMSTS Qualification.
* A good understanding and management of Health & Safety issues.
* Good communication skills between management, site team & client.
* Be able to give good start of shift briefing & identify any hazards in and around the work areas.
* Experience with deep drainage & excavation.
* Sheet piling installation & removal.
* Be able to set up a safe worksite, with exclusion zones & signage etc.
