Job Title: Healthcare Assistant
Department: Inpatient Unit
Reports to: Lead Advanced Nurse Practitioners - IPU
Accountable to: Director of Nursing/Deputy Director of Nursing
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, to be worked on a rota basis to include weekends, bank holidays, evenings/nights
Salary: £23,054.49 per annum, pro rata. This role attracts enhancements for working nights, weekends and bank holidays
OVERVIEW OF ROLE
The postholder will support the registered nursing team in providing care and support to our patients on the Inpatient Unit at our Hospice. Working as part of the designated care team, you will support the registered nurses in promoting and providing patient-centred care, ensuring at all times the comfort, dignity, and privacy of the patients in your care.
Responsibility for Patient Care
* Promote a patient-centred approach to care delivery by assisting patients in all daily living activities, as required by the nursing team and the patients' care requirements, ensuring any changes in a patient’s condition are reported immediately to a registered nurse.
* Ensure patient comfort, dignity, and privacy are maintained at all times and report any concerns to the nursing team.
* Assist in the monitoring of patients’ vital signs after completing the internal training day and competency pack.
* Obtain specimens of body fluids as requested by the qualified nurse after completing the internal training day and competency pack.
* Escort patients to hospital and other appointments as requested.
* Maintain high standards of care in an environment that promotes equality and sensitivity for all individuals.
* Organise and provide patients' meals and drinks as required, ensuring all dietary and medical needs of the patient are followed, raising any concerns with the registered nurse.
* Maintain a safe environment for all patients and colleagues across Mountbatten, reporting any concerns to the registered nurse.
* Practice safe infection control methods at all times in accordance with Mountbatten policy and the required competency standards as a Healthcare Assistant.
* Be aware and practice safe manual handling in accordance with Mountbatten policy, only when the relevant Moving and Handling training has been completed.
* Ensure that all general aspects of supporting the welfare of the patient(s) are provided, including ordering meals, changing and making beds, and providing personal care as required.
Responsibility for Interactions/Communication
* Promote and demonstrate effective communication at all times in line with our values, reporting any concerns to the registered nurse.
* Assist in the reception of patients, their relatives, and IPU/department visitors as requested by the registered nursing team.
* Attend regular IPU and Open Form meetings as required.
* Ensure patients' care plans are updated at all times in accordance with the responsibilities of the role as Healthcare Assistant, seeking guidance from the registered nurse as required.
* Manage own behaviour in a positive manner to maintain effective working relationships.
* Observe complete confidentiality of all information, including awareness and adherence to the legal requirements of the Data Protection Act.
Responsibility for the development of policies and or services
* Participate in IPU or departmental projects when requested, raising any concerns with the registered nurse.
* Set and maintain high personal and professional standards.
* Promote and engage in delivering a palliative rehabilitation and enablement approach, seeking guidance from the registered nurses as required.
Responsibility for finance and use of resources
* Plan, organise, prioritise and control work, ensuring effective use of time and financial resources.
Responsibility for training and development
* Complete the Care Certificate within 6 months of commencing employment.
* Complete NVQ Level 2/3 Direct care as requested.
* Undertake training identified by Mountbatten.
* Attend annual health and safety refresher courses (e.g., fire/manual handling/blood borne viruses/resuscitation).
* Attend mandatory training sessions every 2 years, i.e., food hygiene/tissue viability.
* Support under the direction of the line manager, induction for new employees and students to IPU.
* Link with a registered nurse to support a specific area of practice relevant to your working environment.
* Ensure training is received prior to using any equipment in the workplace.
This role requires use of a range of information systems
* The postholder will undertake basic computer skills training to enable them to complete administrative and organisational tasks as agreed with the line manager.
