About the Role:
As an Autism Support Worker, you will play a crucial role in providing individualised support to pupils with autism, helping them to navigate their educational journey with confidence. Your responsibilities will include implementing tailored learning strategies, promoting independence, and assisting with social and emotional development.
Responsibilities of Autism Support Worker:
* Provide one-to-one and small group support, ensuring that pupils with autism receive the guidance they need to engage confidently in their learning.
* Assist in the implementation of individual education plans (IEPs) and behaviour support plans (BSPs) tailored to each pupil’s needs.
* Help pupils develop essential social, communication, and emotional regulation skills, fostering positive interactions and relationships.
* Use visual aids, structured timetables, and sensory strategies to support pupils with transitions and classroom routines.
* Implement autism-specific interventions, including social stories, TEACCH strategies, and sensory integration techniques.
* Encourage independent learning and life skills, preparing pupils for future success.
* Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and pastoral teams to provide holistic support.
* Assist with personal care and daily routines where necessary, ensuring the comfort and dignity of all pupils.
* Monitor and record pupil progress and behaviour, communicating any concerns to relevant staff members.
What We’re Looking For:
* Previous experience working with children or young people with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), either in an educational or care setting.
* A relevant qualification in Education, Special Educational Needs (SEN), Psychology, Child Development, or a related field is desirable.
* A strong understanding of autism, neurodiversity, sensory processing differences, and effective communication strategies.
* Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with pupils, parents, and staff.
* A patient, empathetic and adaptable approach, ensuring that pupils feel safe, supported, and encouraged.
* Experience with managing challenging behaviours using de-escalation strategies and positive reinforcement techniques.
* Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the update service (or be willing to apply for one).
