Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for two HCPC registered (or working towards) Senior Clinical Scientists to join our Biochemistry team at UHB on a 12-month fixed term contract. Our team comprises 3 Consultant Clinical Scientists, 1 Consultant Chemical Pathologist, 4 Principal Clinical Scientists, 11 Senior Clinical Scientists (including these posts) and 3 STP trainees. We have excellent links with the University of Birmingham and actively contribute to the STP programme.
The UHB Biochemistry department is strong clinically and analytically providing a wide range of services including specialist chromatography, mass spectrometry and immunoassay techniques. There are automation laboratories across three of our hospital sites (Heartlands, Good Hope, and Queen Elizabeth hospitals), with the automation laboratories at QE and Heartlands sites with state-of-the-art laboratories featuring Abbott pre-analytics and Alinity platforms and tracks.
Main Duties of the Job
One successful candidate will work in our automation laboratory at QEHB and one within our specialist testing/toxicology laboratory at the BHH site with cross-site working expected. You will work closely with the Operations Manager and Principal Clinical Scientist to provide high quality analyses over an extensive repertoire. You will also contribute a significant part in developing, growing and optimising the service.
The department has a national reputation for specialist endocrinology, TDM and toxicology investigations using various techniques including mass spectrometry. You will also be expected to contribute to the clinical support activities of the department by participating in the duty biochemist rota.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
* 1st class or 2:1 honours degree in biochemistry, chemistry or a closely related science
* MSc in Clinical Biochemistry or working towards
Experience Essential
* Specialist knowledge of clinical biochemistry and laboratory medicine
* Awareness of the political and cultural aspects of the NHS
* Awareness of clinical governance and risk management
* Awareness of laboratory health and safety
* Awareness and experience of laboratory accreditation standards
Additional Criteria Essential
* Effective communication skills, both written and oral
* Numerate and able to undertake scientific calculations
* Ability to work in a team
* Manage workload effectively when the workload is unpredictable and there are competing demands (medical emergency)
* Good and accurate keyboard skills
