Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust
Are you looking for a rewarding career in Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMHS)? Do you have excellent listening skills, enjoy solving problems, and want to make a difference in the lives of young people who are experiencing a mental health crisis? If so, come and join our CAMHS Crisis Team.
This role is pivotal in reducing hospital admissions of young people. We provide crisis support to young people who are experiencing a mental health crisis. It can be fast-paced, so organization skills and being self-motivated are essential. We provide evidence-based assessments and interventions using creative and pro-active approaches to engage young people. Candidates will be able to travel independently around the locality.
TEWV has now launched the national 111 option 2 mental health line, which has led to further investment to expand our team’s offer. Our team will now provide support to young people who access support through this line. Callers over the age of 16 will talk to a mental health advisor in the screening service provided by the Mental Health Charity Everyturn. They provide low-level emotional support and signposting to other services when necessary. Callers under the age of 16 and for those callers 16-18 requiring a more in-depth discussion about their mental health will be transferred to the CAMHS Crisis Team. A full mental health triage and risk assessment will be completed with the caller to ensure an appropriate level of care is offered.
Main duties of the job
Candidates need a calm, consistent approach when facing the most clinically challenging situations to deliver safe care to young people and their families/carers. They will confidently lead the shift and direct junior staff. They will make sound clinical decisions in crisis situations to help reduce and manage the potential risk of harm. You will engage effectively with young people, families, and other professionals so they receive the right level of support.
To apply for this role, you will have experience in mental health services, and while having knowledge of child and adolescent mental health is desirable, having the right values and attitude plus a desire to learn new skills is essential. You will understand relevant legislation (e.g. MHA, MCA, Children's Act), and have a detailed understanding of safeguarding, clinical risk assessment, and management and its application in practice.
Applicants must have 18 months post-qualifying experience, including sign-off of appropriate preceptorship or competency framework.
As the team continues to develop, you will be given the opportunity to influence and contribute to service development, providing a high degree of job satisfaction and personal progression.

Job responsibilities
If you think that you would like a job where no two days are the same, then the team would like to hear from you. Professional registration within mental health or social care is essential. Experience within an urgent mental health care setting is desirable. Full training in conducting crisis assessments, managing urgent care calls, supporting patients during a crisis, and using our systems will be provided.
The North Yorkshire and York (CAMHS) Crisis Team is a locality-wide team that provides a 24/7 service to young people and their families. If you have a passion for working with children and young people as a clinical specialty and if you are committed to multi-disciplinary and agency work, then we are interested in hearing from you.
The successful applicant will conduct crisis mental health assessments in acute/community settings. You will assess the risks associated with the mental health problem, develop safety plans to reduce the risks, and support safe discharges. You will conduct telephone triages for young people/families who contact the service via the NHS 111 option 2 line. You will engage in multi-agency working and liaison with other professionals involved with the young person/family or who contact the service for advice or support. You will complete formulations and support the safe transfer of care when further longer-term mental health support is required. You will develop crisis care plans which will enhance crisis interventions delivered by the team.
You will be expected to work shift patterns that cover 24/7 service provision across the NYY locality. Our bases include York, Scarborough, and Ripon. We currently have vacancies in our York and Scarborough bases; however, you will be expected to travel around the locality/bases during your shift to meet the clinical demand because we function as a locality team.
This is a job where you can truly have a positive impact on a young person/family's life. It will challenge you, but at the same time, it will help you grow as a person. You will need to be resilient, able to think on your feet, and be quick to adapt to changing situations. You will need to be empathetic and patient, able to understand and connect with young people who are going through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. You will be part of a supportive and encouraging team that is constantly learning and growing, and you will be given opportunities to develop new skills and take on new challenges.
You will be responsible for the provision of excellence in clinical care, promoting a culture of evidence-based practice while acting as shift coordinator on a rota basis, ensuring the efficient and effective running of the team.
You will be responsible for recognizing the potential for or signs of harm, abuse, and neglect, including poor clinical practice, reporting all such occurrences, and taking all reasonable steps to protect the young person.
You will also be responsible for identifying and reporting concerns regarding the safeguarding of children who may be at risk of harm.
In exchange, you will be well supported, with continuing opportunities for your ongoing professional development. You will be offered a staff induction period where you will be supported to build on your knowledge and skills.
