The Role: Lead Design Manager
This role involves managing a small team of engineering colleagues to deliver detailed designs for various workstream areas within IUS. As the Design Manager, you will oversee team development, provide day-to-day support, and lead the provision of enhanced support to the Operations team to ensure all contractual obligations are met.
The role is based in either Stockton or Wakefield, with occasional travel between sites, following agile working principles (three days in the office, two days at home).
Main Responsibilities:
* Enhance current design procedures to reduce company risk and liability by implementing formal validation, verification, and approval processes prior to and during construction.
* Implement robust approval procedures to control and mitigate design liabilities, ensuring all designs meet performance parameters and client expectations.
* Buid an operations-based design team to strengthen design capability in terms of resource, training, competence, and experience.
* Develop competencies to allow IUS to be appointed as a Principal Designer under CDM regulations.
* Establish and maintain a suite of IUS design procedures, standards, specifications, and guidance documents.
* Manage and develop a design framework for external parties, such as Design Houses.
* Develop and implement a design strategy, including roadmap design and development.
* Maintain continuity and consistency of design work across all relevant workstreams, ensuring timely delivery and targets are not affected.
* Upskill design engineers and technicians to meet current and future work programme demands.
* Evidence optimal utilisation and customer charter target achievement by the team.
* Establish a robust quality assurance process for all project, contract, or framework designs.

About You:
* Minimum HNC in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification.
* Ideal Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartered status.
* Good working knowledge of 11kV to 132kV (E)HV networks and substations, including switchgear, transformers, underground circuits, earthing, and protection.
* Experience in electrical engineering design and practices, with a working understanding of the electricity distribution business and its interaction with private networks.
* Excellent team working and communication skills, with ability to manage internal staff, partners, consultants, and contractors.
