Are you a design technology enthusiast ready to inspire the next generation? Do you dream of a career where you can truly make a difference?
We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and inspiring classroom practitioner with a real passion for design technology. We offer an exciting opportunity to join a supportive and motivated team and you must possess the skills and determination to make a significant difference to the lives of our students and share our single goal of ‘students first’. Applications are invited from both newly qualified and experienced professionals from any of the following subject disciplines: food, resistant materials or graphics.
Outwood Academy Carlton is situated in North East Barnsley and is easily accessible from South and West Yorkshire, with Wakefield, Sheffield, Doncaster, Huddersfield and Pontefract all within commuting distance. We are just 5 miles from the M1.
The Design Technology Department
Our design technology department is part of the modern technology faculty that includes Art. It is a friendly, supportive and high performing team of teachers. The department includes a combination of experienced and more recently qualified staff. The department is a great place to start your career as a teacher as well as somewhere where more experienced staff can thrive.
The department is extremely well resourced with subject specific equipment. There are two resistant material classrooms and one food and catering classroom. Every classroom has a visualiser and these are used extensively by the team in frequent and highly effective episodes of guided practice to develop strong procedural knowledge and confidence for independent and deliberate practice. There is a substantial departmental office and the department is supported by two technicians (resistant materials and food).
The department is heavily invested in developing strong disciplinary knowledge at KS3 and KS4. We have multiple, thriving design technology clubs that aim to foster a passion for design technology in the real world and equip students with the confidence and skills to be successful.
We have a strong whole school literacy strategy that aims to ensure that all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading and subject specific tier 3 vocabulary. The department is passionate about students developing their subject disciplinary vocabulary and gives plentiful opportunities for them to do so. Furthermore, there is a comprehensive oracy strategy that is fully embedded within the department and across the academy. This is supporting writing confidence and competence, as well as arming students with exceptional speaking and listening skills.
The design and technology curriculum is built with the end in mind and the KS3 curriculum prepares students for the KS4 qualifications of WJEC Hospitality and Catering (vocational) and WJEC Construction and the Built Environment (vocational). These programmes of study are fully resourced with high quality materials.
