Tutorial Learning Mentor – Barnsley College
Apprenticeships
Salary: £27,350 to £31,590 per annum
Contract Type: Permanent Full time 37 hours per week
Reference: REC2045 | Closing date: Thursday, 6th February 2025
The opportunity
As our Tutorial Learning Mentor within the Apprenticeships department, you will play a vital role in supporting our learners to achieve their full potential. You will work closely with a caseload of learners, offering guidance, encouragement, and practical support to help them overcome barriers to success. By ensuring learners have easy access to college services and external resources, you help create an environment where they feel supported and empowered.
You’ll identify learners at risk by liaising with our Course Leaders, subject teachers, parents, guardians, and external agencies. Through one-to-one and small group sessions, you’ll embed a solutions-focused approach, helping our learners address challenges, build self-esteem, and develop confidence. You’ll also deliver tailored activities that foster peer support and promote skills such as managing emotions, understanding Fundamental British Values, and developing positive behaviours.
A key aspect of your role also involves guiding our learners through their journey, from setting achievable targets and monitoring progress to providing pastoral support for both academic and personal issues. You’ll also act as a bridge between our learners, their families, and external agencies, ensuring effective communication and collaboration to support their needs.
Additionally, you’ll deliver engaging group tutorials and the Personal and Professional Development programme for apprentices, ensuring learners are equipped with study skills and careers guidance. By monitoring attendance, addressing behavioural concerns, and referring learners to appropriate support services, you will actively contribute to their progress and wellbeing.
Your role also supports the wider team, including assisting the Tutorial Team Leader and Apprenticeship Managers with safeguarding responsibilities. This collaborative approach ensures learners have every opportunity to succeed in their educational and personal development.
About you
We’re looking for someone who is approachable, empathetic, and solutions-focused, with a genuine passion for supporting our learners to overcome challenges and succeed. You’ll be a natural communicator, able to build strong relationships with our learners, parents, colleagues, and external agencies. Your ability to inspire confidence and create a supportive environment will be key to helping learners reach their goals.
You’ll bring excellent organisational skills and be comfortable managing a caseload, setting targets, and monitoring progress. Your proactive approach will allow you to identify learners at risk and implement tailored strategies to support their personal and academic development. Whether working one-to-one or delivering small group sessions, you’ll have the skills to motivate and engage learners effectively.
With experience in mentoring or pastoral support, you’ll also have a strong understanding of safeguarding and the barriers to learning that some individuals face. You’ll also be confident in delivering activities that promote personal growth, such as developing self-esteem, managing emotions, and fostering positive behaviours.
You’ll have a good understanding of the further education or apprenticeships sector, and you’ll be skilled in offering advice on study skills, career progression, and personal development. Adaptability and resilience will be essential, as will your ability to respond calmly and professionally to a variety of situations.
Ultimately, we’re seeking someone who is driven by a commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of learners, helping them navigate their journey and achieve success.
Below is a list of some of the key skills, qualifications and experience we are seeking for this exciting opportunity.
