University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust
UHB is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England, serving a regional, national, and international population. The anaesthetic department at the QEHB site is made up of over 130 consultants providing the full spectrum of tertiary and secondary care services.
As a large anaesthetic department, we support both local and international trainees and have an active educational programme. The successful candidate will hold the FRCA, or equivalent, and have extensive experience and evidence of extended training in aspects of general anaesthesia. We particularly welcome applications from motivated individuals keen to invest in the development of the service and contribute to a positive departmental culture.
Neuroanaesthesia
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is one of the biggest neuroscience departments in the UK. As a result, the Neuroanaesthesia group provides perioperative care for a wide range of complex cranial, spinal, and neurovascular procedures. Cranial work includes craniotomies for supratentorial and posterior fossa tumours, functional, and base of skull neurosurgery. There is an established awake craniotomy service. Spinal operations include spinal oncology, spinal deformity work, and thoracic work requiring one lung ventilation. We have a dedicated Neuroangiography suite treating complex aneurysms/AVMs and offering a 24/7 mechanical thrombectomy service.
Main duties of the job
The core component of this post is to provide anaesthetic cover for neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology. Additionally, post holders will contribute to anaesthetic cover for a range of surgical specialty lists.
The post holder must understand the significant ongoing changes in the Trust's services and be prepared to take an active part in the change program.
We have included a suggested job plan in Appendix 1, but the successful candidate will be invited to discuss these options with the Specialty and Departmental CSLs on appointment.
In addition to DCC theatre sessions, the successful candidate will participate in the Neuroanaesthetic and Mechanical Thrombectomy on-call rotas. The present overall on-call frequency is 1:10. Trainee on-call cover is provided by a Post Fellowship SpR who is also the team lead for out-of-hours anaesthesia. The Thrombectomy On Call service is Consultant delivered. Delivery of specialty preoperative outpatient clinics and supporting MDT meetings is also expected.
