Our Opportunity
We currently have an opening in our Systems Engineering job family for a Design Engineer. As a Design Engineer, you are a member of the design team assuring compliance to a defined design process and ensuring that our designs conform to client requirements including quoted standards and specifications.
You will be responsible for design production, design estimates and design work packages for bids, projects and services to contract requirements, standards, budget, and on-time delivery.
You will undertake the role of Designer as identified in the CDM regulations, with particular attention to design risks, ensuring that safety risks are designed out or deemed as low as reasonably practicable.
This is a hybrid role working a minimum of two days per week from our site in Waterloo, London.
Key Responsibilities:
* Collaborate with project managers, designers, and other stakeholders to understand project requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
* Design and develop design solutions using industry best practice. Engage with supply chain to develop understanding of product offerings that can be applied to our solutions.
* Produce designs that are buildable and maintainable that meet customer requirements and relevant standards and legislation.
* Identify and address technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and other hardware issues.
* Work collaboratively with other engineering disciplines and other stakeholders to ensure successful delivery of the project.
* Understand and follow the project delivery processes, methodologies, and use the defined tools as set out in the Hitachi Rail GTS UK Management System and the project specific Engineering Management Plans.
* Support Work Package Managers with timely provision of status, accurate measurement of progress and forecasting of remaining work and by identifying change, variation, risk and opportunity to the work package manager wherever the scope of works is impacted.
Relevant Skills and Experience:
* Keep up to date with the latest related technologies and tools.
* Sound ability to use design tools to produce complex designs.
* Ability to manage a design through a defined design process.
* Ability to produce metrics as part of Quality assurance & control.
* Working knowledge of project plans.
* Working knowledge of Engineering Safety Management.
* Full understanding of the engineering lifecycle and its processes.
* Working knowledge of the CDM regulations.
* Demonstrated design capabilities to at least a supervisor level for one skill set and practitioner level for one or more key skills as captured and managed via the competency and capability management system.
* Can manage configuration control.
Desirable Technical Skills:
* I/P based transmission systems.
* OSI model and network devices in relation to the OSI model.
* IP addressing and Internet Registries.
* MPLS and BGP.
* LAN and WAN protocols, bridging and routing protocols.
* Layer 2 VPNs such as VPWS VPLS.
* Link layer protocols, use of Ethernet as link layer in transmission systems and modems and interface converters.
* Network security devices and applications such as firewalls and IPS.
* Authentication schemes such as RADIUS and token based security.
* Encryption techniques for documents and datalinks.
* Network management systems, network synchronisation and network hierarchy.
* PDH telecommunication equipment and networks.
* Serial data communications and interfaces.
* Structured cabling systems, including fibre optic cabling systems.
* Video standards and transmission systems.
* LV DC Battery Backed Power Supply Systems/installations for telecommunications equipment.
* Materials Approvals for the LUL Environment.
Human Skills:
* Excellent communication skills in all forms and at all levels.
* Collaborative and strong working within a multi-disciplined team.
* Excellent stakeholder management.
