We're recruiting up to three Journalists to join BBC Long Form Audio to work on The Global Story podcast.
The daily pod is being relaunched this spring with a new editorial vision, with a greater emphasis on narrative storytelling. The BBC is investing in the Global Story to become the equivalent of the "front page" of the BBC in North America. The show will provide a deep dive on one big international story every day, giving the audience a deeper understanding of the context and stories that lie behind major global events.
This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of the founding team of this highly ambitious podcast, which will be a core part of the BBC's offering to the US market.
The successful candidate will be part of the Long Form Audio team, and may also have the opportunity to work across the department's other strands and projects.
Main Responsibilities
* Deliver great ideas for stories, guests and audio treatments that give the podcast a strong identity.
* Source and fix the best contributors for the podcast, ensuring a diverse range of compelling stories.
* Mix audio, weaving through archive, music, and reporting to create high-quality narrative storytelling in each episode.
* Brief the presenter ahead of interviews, developing the structure and working to get the best out of every contributor.
* Work to tight deadlines, demonstrating excellent time management.
* Understand the international news agenda and spot trends and stories behind the headlines.
* Refer up on sensitive editorial issues when necessary.
* Communicate effectively with the presenter, contributors, and team to ensure smooth delivery.
Are you the right candidate?
We're looking for creative and passionate journalists, who show initiative and want to make the best audio output. You'll have strong narrative audio production skills, with an understanding of how to tell stories by mixing together interviews, sound, archive and reporting. You'll be able to source the very best interviewees with fascinating stories to tell, and know how to find audio that makes their stories even more compelling.
* Experience delivering high-quality audio storytelling with fast turnarounds and tight deadlines.
* Narrative storytelling experience is desirable, with an understanding of narrative audio production techniques.
* Experience as a fixer with a creative streak to produce impactful audio.
* A good understanding of the global news agenda is desirable.
