School Health Care Assistant (Part time)
Location: Portsmouth, Hampshire
Schedule: Monday to Wednesday, 08.00-16.00 with an unpaid 30min lunch break - 22.5hrs/week
Term time only role FTE salary of £22,613
Our client is a leading co-educational school located in the historic heart of Portsmouth. They are seeking a Health Care Assistant, to start 7th January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The HCA plays a key role in co-ordinating the Health and Wellbeing Centre and providing support to the School Nurses. The Health and Wellbeing Centre provides medical care, first aid and health and wellbeing support to all pupils, from the Pre-School pupils from age 2 and a half to the Sixth Form students up to age 18.
This is a term time only position and the post holder will be in a job share with another Health Care Assistant who works two days each week. During school terms, the hours of work will be 22.5 hours per week, Monday to Wednesday, from 08.00 - 16.00 each day, with a 30 minute unpaid lunch break.
The job carries a significant responsibility for the medical welfare of the school community. The ability to follow instructions safely and effectively and the willingness to work in all areas of provision offered by the Health and Wellbeing Centre are critical. It is particularly important that the candidate can manage stress effectively, be adaptable and resilient. There are an increasing number of pupils with mental health needs who go to the Health and Wellbeing Centre as their safe space. The candidate must be able to welcome and assist these pupils sensitively and competently, and with warmth.
Candidates should demonstrate an interest in working with children and young people and supporting their health and wellbeing. Experience of working in a team, ideally in a customer-facing role with the public, particularly young people and children, is preferred. Previous experience of a similar paid or volunteer role in an education or health care setting, especially in supporting children and young people with mental health concerns, would be an advantage.
Candidates will ideally hold a current First Aid qualification, either in First Aid at Work, Paediatric First Aid or Mental Health First Aid, but this is not a pre-requisite. All necessary training and refresher training will be provided by the school and this can be discussed in more detail at interview.
The successful candidate will be professional and friendly and able to demonstrate good interpersonal skills for effective communication with pupils, parents and staff across the school. Excellent organization skills are essential to prioritize tasks and work well within a small professional team. The successful candidate will be self-motivated and able to work flexibly and under pressure.
