We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Site Supervisor, based in Newbury.
As the Trust continues to evolve, we recognize that excellence in customer service is essential for our long-term success. We are seeking an organized and engaging Site Supervisor who genuinely believes in and demonstrates that a positive customer experience is central to their work and team expectations.
This role involves providing excellent visitor experiences through effective planning and delivery of maintenance and repair works, protecting and enhancing our network as a valued national asset, and delivering customer service. You will be responsible for your team, from scheduling to recruitment.
You will also ensure health & safety and welfare issues are communicated and promoted effectively within your area, understanding your responsibilities and fulfilling your duties according to the Trust's policies and procedures.
Ideally, you possess carpentry skills or experience in bricklaying or plumbing. Good knowledge of Health and Safety, including risk assessments, method statements, and temporary works, is essential. This is a hands-on role involving construction activities alongside supervisory responsibilities.
Location and coverage
The official base is Newbury, but the successful applicant will report directly to the site. This role covers the Kennet & Avon, Bridgewater & Taunton, and Gloucester & Sharpness canals, and may require work in other areas across the region. A full valid UK driving license is essential.
Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

Key responsibilities:
* Carry out construction tasks and supervise a small team of construction site operatives, providing daily onsite supervision.
* Motivate staff to meet quality standards, resolve onsite issues, and manage holidays and absences.
* Support the Construction Manager and deputize when needed, including attending meetings.
* Supervise construction works to ensure delivery according to schedules and specifications.
* Liaise with other teams, third parties, and customers; organize deliveries and logistics.
* Act as Temporary Works Supervisor, ensuring plans are followed.
* Identify solutions for reactive works and minimize customer disruption.
* Supervise Heritage Trainees and Apprentices, providing mentoring and support.
* Work with managers to meet training needs.
* Engage with volunteers, ensuring effective contributions and providing feedback.
* Coordinate with contractors and foster strong working relationships.
* Provide feedback on service issues and best practices; produce service information packs.
* Ensure proper use and maintenance of equipment and yard safety.
* Assist with administrative tasks, including reports and ordering materials.
Health & Safety:
* Promote a safety culture, complete safety paperwork, report incidents, and participate in investigations.
Qualifications/Skills:
* Recognized qualification or equivalent experience (e.g., NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, Apprenticeship in Carpentry, Bricklaying, Joinery, Plant Operation, Construction).
* Valid CAATS competency for plant/tools.
* Safety qualification or relevant experience.
* Leadership or line management experience.
* Experience in construction environments.
* Proficiency with smartphones and work apps.
* Heritage and environmental awareness.
* Current competency in operating construction plant.
* Temporary Works Supervision competency.
