There’s a whole lot more to working in a library than shelving books! And no, we don’t expect silence in a modern library service. Books are a small but important part of working as a Library Assistant.
Are you polite, friendly and helpful? Are you a people person who enjoys variety in their work? Every day there is something new to learn and to teach. We connect with our local communities through story times, offering digital support, putting on cultural events and running various cool activities for all ages.
Newcastle is a great city, one that never stands still, that faces forward and embraces change. A city that makes history and shapes the future with a bold vision to achieve its ambitions for a vibrant City for residents and visitors.
Our services are powered by people and inspired by fresh ideas, and we have an exciting opportunity for an individual looking to start their career at Newcastle City Council in an apprenticeship role.
What will I be doing?
You provide a frontline service to customers in our libraries and partnership buildings across the city, which includes evening and weekend working. At present, this can include taking a turn at a 7pm finish on a Thursday, and Saturdays 10am to 2pm. Working in a customer-focused environment, you will actively promote services – including online – whilst resolving customer enquiries.
As an apprentice you learn on the job, provide excellent customer service and deal with a variety of different enquiries. You support customers with their IT queries including printing and photocopying, encourage reading for pleasure, and promote and support our reading and learning events.
What will I need?
We are looking for people who are motivated, have good ICT skills and a desire to work as part of a team. You’ll have Grades A-E/9-2 in Maths and English GCSE or Functional Skills Level 1 (or equivalent). Speak to us if you’d also like Maths and English support.
What will I receive in return?
We’ll support you to learn new skills, and to thrive in your role, undertaking a Customer Service (Level 2) Apprenticeship Qualification. The role is part-time (27 hours per week) for a fixed term of 15 months. At Newcastle City Council our apprentices are paid a percentage of the salary for the role the apprentice is working towards. This is always at least National Minimum Wage and increases each year as you develop your knowledge and skills.
In this apprenticeship, you’ll be working towards the role of Customer and Culture Assistant, £25,584 - £26,409 per annum (pro rata for part-time hours, pay award pending). You can apply for these roles with us during your apprenticeship.
Whilst we are unable to guarantee a post in the Customer and Culture Assistant role, our apprentices are supported to apply for suitable vacancies so that they can make use of their new skills and qualifications.
