Key Responsibilities
Operational/Strategic Planning
To support the Principal in strategic planning and target-setting to support the College’s strategic aims and objectives and co-ordinate the work of the Senior Leadership Team in this respect. In particular:
* Lead on all aspects of quality, ensuring that the college’s quality cycle and processes are well-planned and implemented to ensure excellent outcomes in all areas of provision.
* Ensure there is a robust Marketing, Liaison and Admissions strategy in place to enable the College to reach recruitment targets, thus securing the college’s future financial stability.
* Ensure an annual Calendar (including assessment calendar) is developed to help manage staff and student workload
* Ensure an annual CPD Plan is developed to ensure that all staff are sufficiently skilled and supported to fulfil their roles and meet the current and emerging needs of the College and students. Oversee the annual CPD Report for SLT and the governing body.
* Ensure both a Student and a Staff Wellbeing Strategy is developed, implemented and reviewed.
* Support the work of the Assistant Principal (Student Support) in developing outstanding student support, including High Needs support.
* Support the work of the Assistant Principal (Student Development) and Assistant Principal (Support) in developing outstanding pastoral care for, and the personal development of, students
* Support the work of the Assistant Principal (Super Curriculum) in developing outstanding extra-curricular opportunities for students, including those which promote employability skills
* Support the work of the Assistant Principal (Staffing) and Assistant Principal (Student Development) in developing the Catholic Ethos of the College
* Contribute to the development and implementation of the College’s Strategic Plan.
* Participate in the target setting process at all levels (College, departmental, individual), ensuring these are challenging but realistic.
* Participate in the College’s Business Continuity Process (BCP) and respond to emergencies following procedures laid down in the BCP.
* Participate in College’s Risk Management process, and ensure risks within remit are managed effectively.
Teaching, Learning, Assessment and Student Outcomes
To lead on improving teaching, learning, assessment and student outcomes:
* Develop, monitor and evaluate the teaching, learning and assessment policy across College
* Support Curriculum Leaders to implement, monitor and assess the impact of this policy in their curriculum areas, and to develop robust annual Quality Improvement Plans within these respective areas, to promote continuous improvement
* Develop with Curriculum Leaders, and other relevant middle managers, quality assurance systems, such as Deep Dives, to inform the assessment of the student experience across College.
* Ensure teaching, learning and assessment are of the highest standard and drive quality improvements across the College
* Ensure teaching staff are supported through high quality Continuous Professional Development and/or coaching and mentoring
* Support the Assistant Principal (Super Curriculum) to encourage and promote the use of ICT to enhance teaching, learning and assessment
* Share and transfer best practice across College, and across the sector (as opportunity presents)
* Ensure that the ALPS and 6D systems are fully understood and embedded into curriculum quality assurance systems
* Ensure that CEDAR is implemented well and used effectively to monitor student progress
Curriculum Offer, Management and Development
Support the work of four Assistant Principals and six Curriculum Leaders to:
* Ensure that the curriculum is responsive and appropriate to national, regional and local economic need, as well as fulfils the Mission of the College
* Ensure that the curriculum is inclusive, continues to address the needs of all students, and provides excellent routes for positive progression
* Ensure that the curriculum offer is affordable
* Ensure that the curriculum staff are effectively deployed
* Ensure that curriculum delivery is characterised by high quality teaching, learning and assessment, and high success rates / value added
* Advise the Senior Leadership Team on curriculum development and / or consolidation
Staffing
* Line manage three Assistant Principals
* Line manage six Curriculum Leaders
* Organise, convene and chair Academic and Achievement Board meetings
* Deal with any staffing matters within managed areas, or any serious matters as requested by HR/Acting Principal.
Students
* Play a lead role with curriculum staffing team in maximising student outcomes, and enhancing the student experience.
* Oversee student/parent/carer concerns and complaints, ensuring these reach an appropriate conclusion.
Safeguarding
* Line manage the Designated Safeguarding Lead, ensuring that all aspects of the post-holder’s remit are fulfilled to the highest standard.
* Ensure the effective implementation of the safeguarding policy and procedures.
Student Behaviour and Attitudes
* Support the Assistant Principal (Student Development) in the promotion of good standards of behaviour and good attitudes by students by ensuring effective Student Conduct including attendance, Discipline and Reward and recognition strategies.
* Deal with serious student matters, suspending or permanently excluding students, as appropriate.
* Undertake staff or student investigations and/or act as a point of appeal, where requested.
* Support the Assistant Principal (Student Development) and Assistant Principal (Support) in the promotion of good standards of behaviour and conduct by students by ensuring effective Student Conduct (including Attendance), Student Discipline and Student Reward and Recognition strategies are in place.
* Deal with serious student matters, suspending or permanently excluding students, as appropriate.
* Undertake staff or student investigations and/or act as a point of appeal, where requested.
Student Involvement
* Oversee the developing student voice in TL&A, and Support Assistant Principal (Student Development) with developing Student Voice across College and Assistant Principal (Super curriculum) with student Engagement across college.
* Work with the above three Assistant Principals (Development, Support and Super Curriculum) to develop and implement a Student Engagement Strategy, in order to improve the quality of provision and meet student needs and interests.
Quality Assurance
Take the lead in planning and implementing all aspects of quality assurance and quality improvement across college, both curriculum and support areas, and in particular:
* Oversee the development and implementation of the College’s Quality Cycle
* Drive the implementation of the Quality Cycle as agreed by SLT and Governors
* Oversee the College self-assessment process
* Produce the annual Results Report, and student progress updates for SLT and governors.
* Promote a culture of continuous improvement and set high standards for all staff and students
* Lead in preparing the College for all external inspections.
* Oversee the staff performance management and staff probationary process.
Equality and Diversity
* Support the Assistant Principal (Staffing & Catholic Ethos) to create a purposeful, positive and supportive College environment, sensitive to equality and diversity, well-being and workload.
Catholic Ethos
* Lead, alongside the Acting Principal and the Assistant Principal (Staffing & Catholic Ethos) to create a purposeful, positive and supportive Catholic Ethos across College.
* Support and contribute to the college’s Catholic Ethos group.
Communications
* Ensure that communication with governors, staff, students and parents/carers is appropriate and effective.
* Liaise with external bodies, as appropriate.
* Attend College events, briefings and meetings as part of the College’s meeting schedule. Lead in the delivery of these, as requested.
* Use the College systems, policies and procedures to communicate issues, as necessary.
Marketing, Liaison & Admissions
* Oversee the work of the Marketing, Liaison & Admissions (MLA) Department through line-management of the Assistant Principal (Super Curriculum).
* Contribute to College’s policy with regard to liaison with High Schools, Higher Education Institutions, employers and other partners, in order to promote the college successfully
* Attend High Schools parents’ evenings, careers evenings and other events, as appropriate.
* Contribute to presentations at college events and in high schools, as necessary.
Management of Resources
* Manage all allocated budgets within agreed limits
* Allocate resources wisely to support the core activities of the College (teaching and learning, student support and development)
* Contribute to the College’s Financial Management, as requested and required
* Ensure that all curriculum and pastoral staff are fully deployed to support outstanding teaching, learning, assessment and student outcomes
* Contribute to accommodation/estates planning, and the work of design teams, as necessary.
Other
* Contribute to the College’s mission and Catholic ethos and support the strategic aims and objectives of the College.
* Follow and comply with College policies and procedures and take responsibility for the duty of care in respect of the levels of Health & Safety across the College.
* Be a member of the disaster recovery team in the event of an emergency.
* Attend meetings in accordance with College meetings schedule, as required.
* Attend and participate in Governing Body meetings, as required.
* Lead on agreed College projects and initiatives, as required.
* Be available for telephone contact as part of the SLT rota during College holidays.
* Represent SLT at college and external events.
* Undertake any other duties of an equal nature as assigned by the Principal.
Carmel College is a leading Catholic sixth form college located in St. Helens, Merseyside, specialising in Level 3 education. With a diverse student body of over 2,000, the college offers a comprehensive range of academic and vocational qualifications, catering for A Level and BTEC students, GCSE Maths and English Language resits, and a Level 4 Art Foundation course in partnership with the University of the Arts, London.
