The City of Houghton seeks an Assistant to the City Manager to join their team in Houghton, Michigan. If you are reliable, detailed, and outgoing, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.
In this position, you will work directly with the City Manager to support operations. You will perform a variety of office duties, from clerical tasks to managing human resources, including insurance and pensions. As you grow in the role, you may take on additional responsibilities like payroll and utility billing.
The city offices are powered by a small but mighty team. Each of us wears multiple hats and steps in to help cover for one another during busy times or when someone’s out. It’s a daily team effort to make sure residents and visitors are served quickly and efficiently, no matter what.

* $24.00 – $28.00 per hour starting pay;
* medical, dental and vision insurance; long-term disability insurance and life insurance;
* Municipal Employees’ Retirement System of Michigan (MERS) retirement plan;
* paid vacation, paid sick time, and paid major holidays;
* full-time Monday – Friday position working 8:00am – 5:00pm.
WHAT YOU WILL DO.
In this role, you’ll be at the heart of city operations, wearing many hats and learning the ins and outs of how we serve our community. Your responsibilities will include:
* Shadow & Learn. As part of your onboarding, you’ll spend some time at the front desk, working directly with the public. This hands-on experience will help you get a feel for the daily flow, learn how the city departments operate, and discover all the unique things that make Houghton special. It’s a great way to dive in, meet the team, and see our community in action.
* HR & Benefits Administration. Help keep our team happy and supported by managing employee benefits, insurances, and human resource tasks. As such, you will interact daily with the City Manager, Clerk, Treasurer, and department heads as well as all employees at various times.
* Payroll & Accounting. Play a vital role in ensuring our team is paid accurately and on time, while staying on top of financial reports.
* Clerical Duties. Handle day-to-day administrative tasks, like scheduling, filing, and communicating with staff and community members.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.
* At least 2 years’ professional working experience in human resources management and/or bookkeeping required.
* Experience working with benefits, insurance, and employee contracts a bonus.
* You are positive, versatile, reliable, and thrive on staying organized and making sure no detail is overlooked.
* Strong computer skills specifically Microsoft Word and Excel are required.
* Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to work-related trainings (approx. 4 times a year and may include overnights stays) is required.
