This is a unique opportunity to gain skills and hands-on experience in professional floriculture. You will be resident at a seasonal flower farm for 6 months (April to September) and required to split a minimum of 16 working hours per week between here and other local partner farms.
Free, independent accommodation will be provided. There will be scope to work additional hours as the traineeship progresses and to supplement your income from other sources of employment if required.
You will be involved in every aspect of the day-to-day business of seasonal cut flower production and retail floristry, but also have opportunities to assist with wedding and event work.
The initial term of the traineeship is 1st April to 31st September, with the option of extending by a number of weeks dependent on seasonal weather.
This role would suit someone in the early stages of their horticultural career with a joint interest in commercial crop production and floristry. Some previous experience in either area would be an advantage, but is not required.
Key Responsibilities
1. To support participating farms in every aspect of the production, processing and sale of their crops, including but not limited to: propagation, harvesting, bunch and bouquet making, record keeping, soil management and general crop maintenance.
2. To support participating farms in delivering additional services, such as workshops, open days, and wedding and event floristry.
3. To provide holiday and out-of-hours cover, in particular for evening and weekend watering.
4. To be proactive in your own professional development. Financial support may be available to pursue relevant qualifications and/or work placements further afield. An independent and thoughtful attitude, with a view to generating learning opportunities or expanding the remit of the role, would be welcomed.
It is strongly advised that applicants have a full, clean driving license and their own vehicle, but this is not a condition of appointment.
