Location: Office Base is London Broadcasting House. This is a hybrid role and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working.

Job Introduction
The News Design team is a multi-platform, multidisciplinary team within BBC News.
We are responsible for the design and visualisation of a story end to end, across all platforms from our website and app to our flagship news broadcasts and social accounts. The team brings together digital designers, broadcast designers, and developers to provide compelling visual coverage of the biggest and most significant stories.
As a Designer - Storytelling & formats, you will work closely with the Creative Director - Story-telling & Formats and the team, working to design beautiful, and engaging storytelling and new formats for our website and app that help our users understand the News.
Main Responsibilities
Storytelling product design:
1. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to create visually stunning animations and illustrations that elevate storytelling on digital platforms.
2. Design and execute compelling animations and illustrations that communicate narrative ideas and concepts effectively.
3. Contribute to the brand's visual language by crafting innovative motion graphics and illustrated assets that captivate and engage audiences.
4. Bring a strong sense of storytelling and emotion to projects through illustration and animation, ensuring visual coherence across platforms.
Illustration and Asset Creation:
1. Develop custom illustrations and assets for use in animations, digital stories, and visual content.
2. Ensure illustrations align with brand guidelines and storytelling needs, while maintaining a high level of creativity and originality.
3. Transform complex ideas into clear and engaging visuals, using illustration and animation to enhance audience understanding and enjoyment.
4. Maintain a consistent visual style across projects, working with other designers and teams to establish a cohesive aesthetic.
Motion Graphics and Animation:
1. Design and execute animations that add depth and emotion to storytelling projects, including short sequences, transitions, and looping animations.
2. Utilise motion graphics to enhance visual storytelling, adding personality and context to static illustrations.
3. Ensure all animations are optimised for digital platforms, maintaining a balance between creativity and technical performance.
Collaboration:
1. Collaborate with editorial, engineering, product and other designers to understand project goals, user needs, and business requirements.
2. Foster a collaborative and communicative design process that includes regular feedback loops.
Research and Innovation:
1. Stay up-to-date with trends in illustration, animation, and visual storytelling, ensuring designs remain fresh and relevant.
2. Experiment with new tools, techniques, and styles to push the boundaries of traditional illustration and animation.
3. Advocate for innovative approaches to visual storytelling that elevate user engagement and brand identity.
Are you the right person?
1. Experience in illustration, animation, or digital storytelling.
2. Proficiency in tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects Fresco) or Procreate.
3. Strong portfolio showcasing illustration and animation projects with an emphasis on storytelling and creativity.
4. Demonstrable understanding of composition, colour theory, and storytelling principles in illustration and animation.
5. Experience working collaboratively in creative teams within fast-paced environments.
6. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present and explain creative concepts effectively.
7. Receptive to feedback and dedicated to refining designs through iteration.
8. Familiarity with accessibility principles in visual design is a plus.
9. Familiarity with Lottie or Rive is a plus.
