Hymers College, a leading independent day school in East Yorkshire, is seeking to appoint an outstanding Teacher of Mathematics at Key Stage 3 through to GCSE and A Level. The ability to teach A Level Further Mathematics is not essential.
The role is full-time and would suit an experienced teacher with a proven record of academic success or a recently/newly qualified teacher, in a school where teachers are enthusiastic practitioners of their subject and have a strong sense of community. In either case, you will strive to be innovative and highly committed and keen to communicate your love of Mathematics, both in your lessons and beyond the timetable. There is the scope to support the Continuing Professional Development of an outstanding teacher, and newly qualified teachers will be supported in their induction period.
Candidates will be university honours graduates in Mathematics or a Mathematics-related discipline, ideally (but not essentially) with a recognised post-graduate teaching qualification.
Mathematics is a popular subject at all age groups through the Senior School and results in public examinations are excellent. At Sixth Form, A Levels in Mathematics and Further Mathematics are offered, with excellent uptake: in year groups of approximately 70 to 100 pupils, around 25 to 35 pupils typically study Mathematics and an additional 15 to 25 also study Further Mathematics. Class sizes of around 8-14 pupils follow the Edexcel specification. Year-on-year outcomes at A Level are excellent: in 2024, 56% of Mathematics grades and 78% of Further Mathematics grades were at A* or A. At Key Stage 4, pupils study the Edexcel IGCSE specification, providing significant overlap with the GCSE qualification (and a highly effective preparation for A Level). Pupils are taught in sets, determined by ability, with Sets 1 and 2 also given the opportunity to take a Level 3 qualification in Algebra. Again, year-on-year outcomes are exceptionally strong: in 2024, 43% of grades were at 9-8, and 58% of grades were at 9-7.
Mathematics is taught in mixed ability Form Groups in Year 7 and is streamed into upper and lower sets in each half of the respective Year Groups in Years 8 and 9. Teaching in the department is characterised by high levels of subject knowledge, both of the subject itself, but also of its assessment and effective pedagogy. More notably, however, the department is noted for its strong team ethic – teachers are highly supportive of each other, work collaboratively and share ideas and resources.
Successful staff will become part of the vibrant Hymers College teaching life. Opportunities in the co-curricular delivery of clubs and societies to enthusiastic students add an extremely fulfilling aspect to the job and one difficult to replicate in other schools. Potential contributions to the co-curricular programme (mathematical or otherwise) should be detailed within the accompanying letter to the application form.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an ability to relate effectively with students, particularly those in Years 7-13, have high levels of enthusiasm, energy and drive, a sense of humour and be flexible in their approach and enjoy working as part of a team. Excellent organisational, time-management, and good ICT skills are essential.
The Deputy Head (Management), Mr Robert Wright, would be delighted to discuss the School or answer any questions over the phone (01482 343555) from Monday 3 February, or by email at rpwright@hymers.org
Hymers College has its own competitive salary scale. Please see the school website for the detailed job specification and application documents via:
