About the job Job summary The Inspectorate of Engineer Resources (IER) team are responsible for the provision of the technical examination services on the Armed Forces, Royal Engineer infrastructure equipment across the UK and overseas locations. Engineering is an integral part of our business focusing on inspecting, testing, and evaluating mechanical systems, equipment, and components that are subject to specialist technical inspection standards beyond the role of the equipment user. In order to identify and provide assurance that the equipment remains fit for purpose, available and safe to use. We continually look for ways to improve processes, techniques with the ultimate aim in maintaining the Army's combat effectiveness. The role of a Technical Inspector plays a crucial part in maintaining operational output, to help ensure a high level of policy and equipment compliance across the engineering function of the Army. This position is advertised at 37 hours per week. Job description The Technical Inspector role is Full Time and successful applicants will be assigned a Permanent Duty Station which will be agreed upon appointment. You will form part of a professional team delivering technical inspections at MoD establishments across your region, with mentorship from the Chief Technical Examiner. Activities can be physically demanding, including outdoor working in adverse weather conditions. There may be occasions where you will be required to work independently to prepare detailed reports and meet deadlines to deliver our high standard of service. Applicants must hold a NVQ Level 3 Engineering qualification, ideally with experience of Non Destructive Testing (NDT) such as through the use of; Ultrasonic Testing, Magnetic Particle, Dye Penetrant and Visual Inspections. Applicants will also be required to use a wide and varied range of precision measuring equipment in accordance with relevant Armys policies and procedures. This can be developed within the role with training provided free of charge. Additionally, the role may require periodic overnight stays away from the PDS to perform inspections at MoD establishments across the globe. With the need to travel, applicants should ideally hold a Full UK drivers licence as not all our sites are well served by public transport. Travel expenses are covered by the Department, including accommodation and meals. When there is a necessity to travel overseas, which may involve some weekend travel, you will qualify for Travel Time allowances. Person specification As a Technical Inspector in the Inspectorate of Engineer Resources (IER) Team you will: Undertake mandated technical and physical inspections of Royal Engineer infrastructure equipment to verify adherence to engineering policy, standards and safe systems of work. Prepare and deliver all technical inspection reports, outlining findings, recommendations and de-tailing risks and equipment serviceability to relevant Senior Management as required. Provide units/organisations with clarity, direction and / or guidance on any aspect of IER certification policy. Make decisions within the limits of own competence. Ensure that engineering currency is maintained with relevant examination standards and policies applicable to Royal Engineer infrastructure equipment. Essential Skills: An NVQ Level 3, or equivalent, in a relevant Engineering subject area is essential. Able to self-manage workload. Highly organised with effective planning skills. Desirable Skills: Certified in Level 2 Non-Destructive Testing methods. Experience in engineering systems is desirable, though training will be provided. I.T. literate, proficient with Microsoft Office tools. Ability to work autonomously and within a small team. Registered or expected to achieve registration with the Engineering Council as an Engineering Technician (EngTech).
