Flood Risk & Drainage Engineer (Midlands)
PJA is looking to recruit a Flood Risk and Drainage Engineer to support the continued success of our Birmingham office.
We seek an experienced Flood Risk and Drainage Engineer to join our friendly team of specialists in the Birmingham Water Resources Team. This role involves delivering drainage strategies, with a familiarity of flood risk, for both private and public sector clients within one of the UK’s leading independent consultancies.
For the right individual, this is an excellent opportunity to help develop a strategically important sector of the business. PJA is currently engaged in numerous projects, ranging from small-scale developments to larger initiatives involving 150 to 10,000 residential units and the supporting infrastructure.
The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years’ experience of working in the drainage and Flood Risk sector in the UK, including the completion of Flood Risk Assessments, SuDS and Drainage strategies, as well as contributions to other civil engineering projects within the water and environment industry.
Candidates should possess a strong academic background in a relevant science discipline (e.g., a degree in Civil Engineering or a related higher education qualification) and/or extensive experience in a similar position.
The successful applicant will also have:
* Comprehensive knowledge and experience in preparing and delivering Flood Risk Assessments and preliminary/conceptual Drainage Strategies to support Local Plan representations and outline planning applications, as well as detailed surface and foul water drainage strategies for full planning applications.
* A solid understanding of national planning policy and relevant legislation concerning flood risk and drainage (such as the NPPF & PPG, SuDS Manual, Flood and Water Management Act, and Water Framework Directive), along with best practices related to flood risk, drainage and the water environment.
* Familiarity with drainage modelling techniques, as well as detailed experience with Causeway Flow, AutoCAD, Civils3D (including the production of earthworks models), and GIS.
* Experience attending meetings and liaising with clients, architects, contractors, local authorities, and other statutory bodies.
* Strong report writing skills.
* Excellent organisational, communication, and time management skills.
* Takes a practical approach to problem solving.
* An understanding of the Flood Risk Activity Permitting and Land Drainage Consent Process would be advantageous but not essential.
* Chartered status or working towards Chartered status (ICE/CIWEM) would be advantageous.
