Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
To be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Bacteriology laboratory as well as ensuring smooth transport of work from all sites in the network.
To act as contingency for Virology/Molecular operational management.
To undertake highly complex; specialist tasks for bacteriology areas including but not exclusively complex work improvement analysis; cost improvement initiatives and successful implementations.
To be responsible for the quality-of-service delivery including UKAS accreditation and meeting key performance indicators for the Microbiology laboratories.
To be responsible for ensuring that all activities that are undertaken in the Microbiology laboratory are compliant with relevant policies of accrediting and regulatory frameworks.
To manage the Technical Leads, Quality Manager/Health and Safety Advisor for the Microbiology laboratory with the exception of medical, clinical scientist and nursing staff.
To be responsible for informing and implementing strategic developments within the Microbiology laboratory and to contribute to developments across SWL Pathology as appropriate as a member of the management team.
To manage pay and non-pay budgets.
To represent SWL Pathology for issues relating to their area of responsibility, which would involve liaising with representatives of the local commissioners and other external agencies.
To be involved in setting priorities, initiating developments, overseeing audit and training across the Microbiology division.
To be responsible for the formulation of strategies for the training, supervision, and development of all non-medical staff within the Microbiology laboratory and users of the service as appropriate.

Qualifications and Training
Essential Criteria
* Post graduate Management qualification or equivalent experience
* Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) within relevant area
* MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent
* HCPC Registration
* Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Scientists or equivalent experience
Desirable Criteria
* Recognised qualification in laboratory design and or workflow management
Knowledge and Experience
Essential Criteria
* Significant experience in the practice of Microbiology Laboratory Medicine
* Ability to carry out staff appraisals
* Experience in staff recruitment and selection
* Experience in handling complex HR issues
* Experience in problem solving
* Use of pathology computer systems
* Track record of a management role in Microbiology
Desirable Criteria
* Experience of working and managing different specialist areas within Microbiology and Immunology
* Financial management and procurement
* Experience of data capture and reporting with laboratory information systems
