The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is seeking to recruit a Consultant Spinal Deformity Surgeon to maintain capacity and improve delivery of high-quality spinal surgery to fill from the retirement of a Spinal Deformity Surgeon. At the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, the Consultant would join a surgical team of eight orthopaedic and three neurosurgical spinal surgeons, working with colleagues to ensure and enhance effective patient centred care.
The department undertakes a comprehensive range of surgical procedures with particular expertise in reconstructive surgery for tumour, trauma, infection, and deformity.
This post is a replacement for a retiring senior surgeon who subspecialised in complex paediatric spinal reconstruction surgery. Consequently, it is essential that the applicant is a well-experienced Consultant Spinal Surgeon with a subspecialty interest and proven track record over several years of delivering high quality effective care to complex paediatric spinal deformity patients. The surgeon should also be skilled and experienced in anterior spinal surgery for adults and paediatric patients.
Main duties of the job
The post is expected to attract 10 PA's with an on-call commitment of approximately 1:11 providing emergency routine spinal care to Birmingham and Worcestershire, and beyond.
The appointee will have a particular interest in paediatric spinal deformity surgery and will also deliver adult spinal deformity alongside adult degenerative spinal surgery. This will maintain a level of competence commensurate with participating in a comprehensive spinal on-call service including decompression and stabilisation for spinal cord and cauda equina compression. There is no requirement to undertake intradural surgery.
The department is looking to grow its adult deformity service and consequently, the applicant would preferably have experience leading in adult deformity spinal surgery.
The individual appointed will have completed orthopaedic training and a Spinal fellowship with particular interest in adult and paediatric spinal deformity surgery. They will have at least 5 years of consultant practice delivering and leading in-patient and out-patient paediatric spinal surgery, preferably more than 8. They will join the Spinal On-Call rota providing cover to the West Midlands and Worcestershire. Currently, on call intensity is 1:10. The spinal on-call rota is separate from the rest of the hospital therefore, there is no requirement to cover orthopaedic patients with non-spinal conditions.
