Description Summary and purpose of position: Health and Safety Advisor based in Hemel Hempstead, reporting to the Operations Manager and provide critical, hands-on support to the local operational teams within both warehouse and transport functions. This role will also have a dotted line into the Home Delivery Network H&S Advisor for reporting purposes. The key elements of the role will be to provide a solid framework that allows the team to achieve and maintain a pioneering Health, Safety, Environment and Facility standards across the operation. In addition, the role will be required to support the Portbury location for the Home Delivery and Roper Rhodes operations, working remotely. Primarily the role is Monday to Friday, but on occasion some flexibility may be required to support outside of this window due to operational requirements. Duties and responsibilities: Whilst this role is based at Hemel Hempstead, support will be required for the Portbury location, supporting the Home Delivery Network and Roper Rhodes, working remotely, for instance, being involved in accident investigations. In addition, collating month end data for these operations and entering onto the EcoOnline system. There may also be a requirement to travel to Portbury on occasions to support with prepping for H&S Audits. Ensure that the Hemel Hempstead Facilities pre-planned maintenance schedules for statutory and non-statutory inspections are in place and are carried out in a timely manner. Manage site Health and Safety in accordance with Wincanton’s Safety Health Environmental Procedures. Ensure the site meets or exceeds the Health and Safety targets expected by Company / Client, eg. LTIFR, TIFR and CMK. Ensure site training records and site training matrix meet the required Wincanton standards and are up to date. Co-ordination of all site Health and Safety activities including committees and training and communications to ensure the site remains compliant. Own the sites Risk Assessment and SSoWs programme – ensuring they are compliant and up to date. Use corporate IT systems eg. EcoOnline, Webrisk etc. to produce reports and also complete mandatory IT training modules in a timely manner. Ensure compliance when dealing with accident investigation, Major Incidents and RIDDOR reports. Ensure personal involvement in the investigation and remedial actions for all major incidents & lost time incidents. Work in line with Company Process and Audit requirements. Act as necessary without supervision to get things done and organize people and activities effectively, knowing what to measure and how to measure it. Liaise with the Home Delivery Network H&S Advisor and site(s) management team(s). Define problems and devise effective solutions using rigorous logical and analytical tools. Be pro-active in decision making based on analysis, experience, judgement and intuition. Carry out site inspections to analyses what exists and what needs to be done and arrange for appropriate actions to be taken. Ensure compliance with Regulations by making frequent, unannounced physical inspections and by audits of the written documentation. Hold Health & Safety meetings and oversee First Aiders on site again acting in accordance with site compliance and current legislation. Manage and drive safety plans across site including advocating a H&S comes first culture. Assist the Business Unit H&S Manager at other locations within the area in agreement with local management. Ensure management of contractors on site i.e., permit to work is compliant against Wincanton standards Visit Portbury when required to monitor compliance To attended company safety conferences / courses as required throughout the year Experience, skills, and attributes: Currently holds or working towards a relevant Health and Safety qualification such as NEBOSH Experience of HSE in an operational area, preferably in a warehousing operation Proactive, effective, and motivated team player who can demonstrate a strong capability of engaging with the workforce and be able to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing Remains calm and works well under pressure in tight deadline situations, displaying exceptional organisational skills Must possess strong Microsoft Office skills Experience of working to ISO standards would be of benefit Must be able to demonstrate a keen interest in continually improving our Health, Safety and Environment performance Flexible, adaptable and able to think rationally under pressure Be organised and able to prioritise Our Commitment: Our people are our most important asset and as such we are constantly expanding our capability programs to provide you with opportunities to build and extend your professional skills and career opportunities.
