THE TEAM
The data science team are seeking a Senior Data Scientist/Operational Researcher to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data science ideally in the area of Network & Scheduling. Responsibilities include developing and implementing optimization models, analysing data to identify innovation opportunities, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive delivery of the models we build.
The role forms part of the Data Science team responsible for developing new prediction, simulation, optimisation and AI capabilities that will help transform easyJet into the world’s most data driven airline.
The Data Science team is an integral part of the wider Data team, which also includes Data Analytics and Data Management teams, and is closely integrated with the IT team, especially in areas of Demand Management, Data Engineering and Service Delivery. The team works closely with a growing number of internal stakeholders across easyJet on multiple transformation projects.
This role reports into a Lead Data Scientist.
JOB PURPOSE
The Senior Data Scientist will be responsible for :
1. Leading the delivery of optimization algorithms and mathematical models that solve complex business problems with minimal support from senior team members
2. Collaborating with the data science and analytics team to advance the teams optimization capabilities
Communicating complex optimization concepts to non-technical stakeholders
3. Participating in the majority of the Data Science Project Lifecycle utilising knowledge of
the Data Science Toolbox
Management Track:
4. Line managing junior team members with support from senior leadership team
Specialist Track:
5. Starting to develop a sufficiently broad area of specialism (, or a Business area such as Network & Scheduling), and become a valued and trusted expert within the Data Science team
JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES
6. Contribute to the majority of the Data Science Project Lifecycle from idea to production
7. Build, validate and manage intermediate prediction, simulation, optimisation models and algorithms
8. Work with senior team members to define and use the key performance indicators (KPIs) and diagnostics to measure performance against business goals
9. Understand and monitor data quality to improve confidence in the data used for analysis
10. Follow Agile methodologies and an hypothesis-driven approach
11. Contribute to hiring and building a great pool of Data Scientists for your team
Management Track:
12. Define clear objectives for each individual you manage
13. Ensure each individual you manage has a personal development plan and regularly proactively works on it
14. Carry out people routines for direct reports
Specialist Track:
15. Have started to develop a deep knowledge of a sufficiently broad area of specialism (, or a Business area such as Network & Scheduling), and to act as a valued and trusted expert within the Data Science team
16. Coach and Mentor colleagues within the Data Science team to help them develop technical excellence
17. Deliver some training sessions for the Data Science team in your specialist area
Requirements of the Role
TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED
18. Have strong programming skills in python, SQL and one compute optimised language
19. Have an intermediate knowledge of optimisation techniques such as Linear Programming, Integer Programming, Mixed-Integer Programming, constraint programming
20. Have knowledge of both exact methods as well as (meta)heuristic methods of optimization
21. Knowledge of the Data Science Toolbox (, computer programming, Data Ingestion, Data Munging, Data visualisation, Machine Learning, Optimisation, Simulation, Reinforcement Learning and Big Data techniques and technologies)
22. A good analytical background, with a degree or MSc in a scientific/engineering field (Statistics, Maths, Computer Science, Engineering, Physical Sciences) or equivalent commercial experience
