Horizons Plymouth is a vibrant children’s sailing charity dedicated to making the local marine environment accessible to all communities in Plymouth. With over 30 years of history, our mission is to offer inclusive sailing and wheelchair-accessible motor boating to children, young people, individuals with disabilities, and community groups who otherwise wouldn’t have these opportunities. We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Senior Instructor to join the small core delivery team. This will be a full-time permanent role and you will need to have a proven track record of working as a Senior Instructor. You will be a key part of the delivery team and work closely with the Chief Instructor to deliver opportunities for our participants, teaching the dinghy, keelboat and powerboat scheme. This role offers the chance to be part of a busy, fun, and varied activity programme, working in the historic Naval Port of Plymouth.
Horizons are part of the Andrew Simpson Group, securing the future of the Charity and enabling them to grow and flourish. As such the successful candidate will play a key part in evolving and developing the charitable activity of Horizons, including working with key partner organisations. Employment will be with the Andrew Simpson Centres but working full time for Horizons in Plymouth.
You will need to work in alignment with Andrew Simpson Foundation values and strategic goals and will play a role in developing the scale and scope of the offering at Horizons, Plymouth in line with organisational growth and with central support.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Programme Delivery: Lead and facilitate on-water sessions for a diverse range of young participants.
2. Volunteer Support: Assist the Chief Instructor in training and managing our team of adult volunteers.
3. Fleet Maintenance: Help maintain our fleet of sailing and powerboats.
4. Course Delivery: Deliver RYA Courses in the National and Youth Schemes.
5. Training & Development: Attend local and regional RYA training sessions to stay updated with best practices.
6. Community Engagement: Work closely with the Chief Instructor to grow and develop the charity’s programmes.
7. Safety & Conduct: Ensure adherence to Horizons’ Code of Conduct and health and safety regulations.
8. Additional Duties: Carry out any other tasks as requested by the Chief Instructor, including potential minibus transportation of participants.
Requirements:
1. RYA Senior Instructor certification with a valid First Aid certificate.
2. Experience in sailing and powerboating in tidal waters.
3. Clean Enhanced Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) certificate.
4. Experience working with children and young people.
5. Ability to work with participants who have additional needs.
6. Experience working with and motivating volunteers.
7. Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
8. Valid UK driving licence.
9. RYA Multihull Endorsement.
10. RYA Powerboat Instructor certification.
11. RYA Shore-based Instructor certification.
12. D1 Minibus licence.
13. Previous experience working within a charity structure.
