Job Specification: Electrical Controls Engineer
Location; Barnsley - Hybrid
Job Summary / Purpose of Role
The Electrical Controls Engineer is responsible for the complete project lifecycle of Automated Control Systems. This includes programming Siemens PLC, HMI, SCADA systems, and safety-related functions, as well as the creation of FSD/SDS, FAT/SAT, and other relevant design documentation.
Job Responsibilities / Key Accountabilities
* Preparation of estimates, tenders, design specifications, and tender specifications.
* Minimum of 6 years’ experience as a Controls Engineer.
* Production of FDS/SDS documentation.
* Ability to design and program PLC / HMI / SCADA systems for various industries using Siemens, Mitsubishi, and other relevant equipment.
* Design of electrical distribution and motor control centres, and PLC control systems (AutoCAD).
* Involvement in projects from enquiry and concept design through to detailed design.
* Attending client and sub-contractor meetings to provide technical expertise and project support.
* Production of test documents (FAT/SAT) and attending panel manufacturers' premises for Factory Acceptance Testing.
* Keeping up to date with the latest developments in electrical engineering.
* Authoring of Operation & Maintenance (O&M) Manuals.
Job Requirements / Knowledge and Experience
Essential Knowledge and Experience
* An engineering qualification at least to level 4 (HNC/HND/Degree or equivalent).
* At least 6 years’ experience as a Controls Engineer.
* Relevant design (AutoCAD) experience in an Electrical Design / Controls Engineer role.
* Experienced in control panel/MCC design, ideally with Siemens equipment.
* Knowledge of industrial control systems, including electrical distribution equipment, motor control centres, and PLC control panels.
* Experience in project management of electrical engineering and controls projects.
* Experience in a turnkey project environment.
* Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
* Excellent problem-solving skills.
* Ability to work proactively both individually and as part of a small team.
* Working knowledge of BS EN 60204 and BS 7671.
* Ability to produce and manage RAMS (Risk Assessment Method Statements).
Desirable Knowledge and Experience
* Knowledge and understanding of AC/DC drive systems.
* Familiarity with related hydraulic systems.
* Experience with Safety-Related Control Systems to BS EN IEC 62061 or BS EN ISO 13849.
* Experience in installation and commissioning procedures is advantageous.
