Bring your environmental passion for rivers to life!
The South East Rivers Trust has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual who is keen to join in river and catchment enhancement work - making a positive, lasting difference to the aquatic environment in the south east of England.
About us
The South East Rivers Trust (SERT), is the river restoration charity for the South East of England. Our vision is that rivers across the South East are clean, healthy and rich in biodiversity. Our mission is to restore and protect rivers and their catchments against multiple threats and a dramatically changing climate. We do this by:
delivering evidence-based and nature-based solutions on land and in rivers;
inspiring and empowering more people to protect rivers for the future.
Working at SERT is rewarding, fulfilling and busy. We work collaboratively and with passion, and this is reflected in our core values of: delivering high quality work, using expertise and scientific understanding, building good and effective relationships, and bringing positive energy to all we do. With rivers and catchments needing serious action to survive, our aims are growth and impact – so you’ll be comfortable with challenges and excited by change. If this sounds like an environment that you would thrive in, we would love to hear from you.
Why Join SERT?
This is a new and unique role giving the successful applicant the opportunity to support making a real difference to the rivers in the South East. Working closely with other members of the Restoring Rivers and Catchment Team, you will be managing and delivering projects to improve, protect and enhance our rivers. This is a fantastic chance to make this role your own, whilst contributing to improving our natural environment.
What does the role involve?
Projects vary in size and complexity and will involve different aspects of work to enhance our rivers such as weir removal, installing fish passages, creating natural habitats and creating wetlands. This role will be responsible for overseeing site operations liaising between Contractors, Project Managers and external Stakeholders to ensure work is delivered on time, safely, on budget and to a excellent standard. Whilst this is a hybrid role with time being spent in an office environment, either at home or in our office in Leatherhead, it is primarily active and outdoors.
Who are we looking for?
You will be an advocate of our natural river environment and have experience in site management within the construction industry, preferably delivering environmental projects. You will be someone who likes to get their hands dirty by getting physically involved in the work to improve our rivers. You will be happy to fell trees, work in rivers and on muddy banks supporting the delivery of our multiple projects. You will be flexible in your approach to working hours, with the ability to travel across the south east, multi tasking to ensure all your sites are being managed effectively, to deliver the projects. You will be able to manage initially one member of staff, but potentially, more in the future, as our organisation continues to grow. You will have a friendly disposition, whilst being able to manage difficult situations with authority and diplomacy.
