The 13 Week Summer Placement Programme
Our Summer Placement Programme is designed to offer you the opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills required to become an engineering or business professional of the future. On our programme, you will engage with challenging and exciting project work and deliver innovative business or technical solutions as part of a team of subject matter experts. Throughout the programme, you will receive coaching and support from your team to achieve your objectives as well as your personal development goals. You will gain a wide array of experience on your placement that you can apply to your academic studies and future career.
You will report to an experienced engineer who will provide day-to-day guidance and on-the-job training. You will be introduced to the hardware development processes and utilise state-of-the-art methods, technology, and tools. You will gain experience in an aspect of the development lifecycle that will include requirements analysis, design, implementation, integration, applied research, and testing. You will have the opportunity to learn about the Leonardo product via a placement within a real IPT.
You will contribute to solving real-life engineering problems on state-of-the-art test equipment. Particular emphasis will be placed on learning practical skills that may not be easily gained or experienced in the academic environment of university.
You should demonstrate an interest in one or more of the disciplines within Electronics Hardware Engineering (e.g., RF, Microwave, Power supply, EMC, FPGA, and high-speed digital). If you successfully complete your placement and meet the required standard, you may be given the opportunity to be 'fast-tracked' to a further summer placement or Graduate position at Leonardo.
To learn the skills required for hardware development, you will develop practical skills in design techniques for aerospace applications, understand key technologies, and develop your experience using ECAD tools and test equipment. You will deliver technical reports and presentations on your work assignments to your supervisor and fellow placement students.
Most training will be delivered on the job, working on real test equipment within project groups delivering test systems to our customers. Additional formal technical training to support the on-the-job training may be provided via taught courses depending on the business needs.
All of our placements should be working towards (a) a minimum of an upper Second class Bachelors/Integrated Masters degree, or (b) a higher degree, such as an MSc or PhD. In all cases, the subject should be Electronics Engineering, Engineering Science, Physics, or another relevant discipline.
