Job description
This is a great opportunity to shape the UK's ecosystem for engineering biology. Engineering biology is one of the UK's five critical technologies. You will join DSIT's Engineering Biology Team, an ambitious and supportive group with a track record of high-quality, impactful work. We cover policy from growth to international partnerships to national security.
You will own policy projects that will advance and grow the UK's engineering biology sector. These projects will align with themes of the 2023 National Vision for Engineering Biology: world-class R&D, infrastructure, talent and skills, regulation and standards, adoption in the economy, and responsible and trustworthy innovation. You will address questions such as:
- "how can the opportunities for using engineering biology help government�s wider priorities?"
- "what pipeline of talent and skills is required for the UK engineering biology sector?", or
- "what support do UK academics and firms need so their innovations can reach markets?"
Person specification
Key responsibilities:
The job's exact responsibilities can be adapted to your interests and experience. You can expect to own and drive policy and delivery projects that support the UK's engineering biology and industrial biotech sectors, informed by the 2023 National Vision for Engineering Biology. You will:
- Be responsive to government�s emerging priorities. You will approach these opportunities in an entrepreneurial manner.
- Maintain a network across Government that is bought-in to the most exciting applications of engineering biology. These could be in agriculture, biofuels, chemicals, materials and animal and human health.
- Collaborate with these partners to design and deliver your projects. You will build strong links with UK Research & Innovation and UK regulators.�
- Consult and engage with academics, SMEs, corporates and investors on the scope and design of your policies.�
- Draw on qualitative and quantitative insights and analysis to shape your projects. This may involve building new datasets.�
The Engineering Biology Team is growing and delivering at pace, driven by high Ministerial interest. You may also support activity across the team to meet the high level of ambition for this technology

Office attendance
The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK. The current expectation for staff is to attend the office or non-home based location for 40-60% of the time over the accounting period.
