Job Function: Corporate Affairs and Communications
About the role
National Energy System Operator (NESO) lies at the heart of the energy system as an independent, public corporation with responsibilities for planning and operations. This is the first time in Great Britain that one organisation will plan and operate the whole energy system.
NESO keeps the power flowing for Great Britain. We move electricity around the grid to ensure supply meets demand every second of every day.
As the UK moves towards its Clean Power for 2030 and 2050 net zero targets, NESO has a vital part to play. We want to operate a zero carbon electricity system by 2025 so we’re collaborating with global industry experts to facilitate a low carbon energy future.
This role, working alongside another Media Manager and reporting to the Head of Media, is a crucial part of the NESO’s busy press office and Corporate Affairs directorate. We’re looking for an excellent writer with good judgement, a passion for news, experience in social media strategy and a proven track record in gathering stories from a complex business and selling them into media in a creative, ambitious way.
This role can be based from Wokingham, Warwick or Glasgow and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.
Key Accountabilities
* Handle media enquiries and draft responses for sign off, escalating where urgent and/or serious.
* Create news items, blogs and other content for use across all NESO channels.
* Prepare briefing notes, talking points, background papers to ensure all spokespeople are well-prepared ahead of any media interaction or speaking engagement.
* Keep a log of media enquiries and responses.
* Provide media summaries and cuttings reports.
* Participate in 24/7 duty press officer rota.
* Play an active role in the NESO media crisis procedures and processes.
* Develop strong relationships with key journalists and editors, particularly sector correspondents and trade press.
* Discover stories from across the NESO and turn them into compelling media opportunities driving regular positive coverage across target print, broadcast and digital channels.
* Keep abreast of industry and business news, spotting opportunities for the NESO to tell its story in the context of the wider news agenda.
