Senior Healthcare Support Worker Ophthalmology

The Ophthalmology Department at York Teaching Hospitals NHSFT are recruiting for a band 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker to join our welcoming and growing nursing team. We are looking for skilled applicants with experience in ophthalmology clinics and a passion for providing high quality care, to support the diverse range of patients attending our eye clinics.
The role will be cross-site between York Hospital and our fantastic new facility at The Community Stadium, with the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge across all areas of the eye clinic. A significant emphasis will be on mentoring less experienced members of the team, including new starters.

Main duties of the job
* Continue to provide excellent patient care in undertaking tasks involved in the patient journey, for example:
o Testing Vision
o Measuring IOP
o Conducting Humphrey visual fields tests
o Instilling eye drops under supervision of registrants
o Attending to patients' general and specific needs during their visit
o Inclusive of many other duties of HCAs
* Leading on audit and improvement projects in the eye clinic, with the support of the leadership team.
* Mentoring less senior members of the team, including new starter HCAs.
* Providing guidance and support for all staff members, leading in terms of attitude, energy, and quality of care.
* Upholding and providing a shining example of the Trust's values at all times.
* Assisting nurses, doctors, and AHPs in treatment rooms for procedures such as intravitreal injections, across sites (York Hospital and Stadium) where appropriate.

Person Specification
Experience
* Previous experience working and communicating with the public in a health/social care/educational role.
* Experience in mentorship/teaching.
* Experience working within a team in a healthcare environment.
Skills
* Demonstrate high quality and effective communication skills.
* Basic IT literacy and experience with CPD and patient records.
* Using initiative when problem solving, working independently and without direct supervision. Ability to manage own workload, taking advice of nursing and consultant colleagues.
Knowledge
* Sign-off on all appropriate band 2 HCA tasks specific to ophthalmology.
* Evidence of knowledge of ophthalmic anatomy, testing, disease, and treatments (giving examples).
Qualifications
* A minimum of Grade C or above in English and Maths, at GCSE level (or equivalent, e.g. Level 2 functional skills).
* Level 3 vocational qualification in a health/social care related subject, or willingness to complete the level 3 Diploma (QCF) appropriate to the clinical area, as provided by the organisation, within 24 months.
