More detail about the role
Peninsula Clinical Genetics are delighted to have an opening for a fixed term Genomic Practitioner role to support the development of the National Inherited Cancer Predisposition Register (NICPR). The Genomic Practitioner will work alongside the current Genomic Practitioner and Genetic Counselling team to support the delivery of a high-quality clinical genetics service. Development of the NICPR is part of the England Rare Diseases Action Plan for 2023 for the National Disease Registration Service (NDRS), to appropriately collect information on individuals with a high genetic risk of a predisposition to malignancy. The NICPR will allow curation of a central list of all individuals with a known inherited cancer predisposition across England, and provide better understanding of the numbers and geographical locations of these individuals. This will also create novel clinical and research opportunities for these patients in the future.
The Genomic Practitioner will be responsible for sensitively gathering information from patients and genetic records, reviewing and collating the retrospective data for individuals with confirmed pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants in a defined list of cancer predisposition genes for submission to NICPR. With guidance, the Genomic Practitioner will liaise with other departments and NHS trusts to obtain relevant information, including confirming diagnoses and test results. As part of their patient support role, the Genomic Practitioner will also assist the Cancer Genetics team in supporting pre and post clinic care, multi-disciplinary meetings and recruitment to research.
This role requires excellent interpersonal abilities, experience in a clinical setting and strong organisational skills. The ideal candidate will have an interest in, and some prior knowledge of clinical genomics. You will be supported by clinical leadership within Clinical Genetics.
The Peninsula Clinical Genetics Service includes three offices in Exeter, Plymouth and Truro. Our welcoming team includes Genetic Counsellors, 2 STP trainees, Consultants, 2 SpRs, 2 Genomic Practitioners as well as a Family History and Administrative team. The counties of Devon and Cornwall offer a high quality of life. The region, named as the best place to live in the UK in national surveys, is located close to miles of stunning coastline and enjoys a lively cultural scene.
Working Pattern: Monday to Friday, 9 to 5pm
Interview Date: Friday 10th January 2025 via Microsoft Teams
