We provide care for Term and Preterm babies who require support at birth. We care for babies with complex health needs, babies who require Surgical intervention, Neurological or Cardiac input. Our Nursing team rotate within all areas of the Ward. We provide an excellent staff development programme and facilitate the opportunity for career progression. We take routine and emergency admissions for heart surgery, bridging to transplant (ventricular assist devices), heart /lung transplant and a type of advanced heart and lung life support known as ECMO, (Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation). We are one of only two centres in the United Kingdom who can carry out heart/lung transplantation in children. Children on our unit are cared for on a 1:1 basis, as they require continuous individual 24-hour care. Children on some specialist therapies require 2:1 nurse ratio. You will undergo specific in-house training to develop our scope of professional practice to perform extra duties. We offer an extensive preceptorship programme aimed to facilitate your learning, skills and confidence in this specialist area. We are committed to staff wellbeing and support staff through our own Professional Nurse Advocate, monthly drop-in sessions, psychology, restorative clinical supervision and the national SWell in PICU programme.
