About us
The Emergency Departments within Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust receive approximately 150,000 patients per year making us one of the largest units in the South West. Gloucestershire Royal ED is an accredited Level 2 Trauma Unit, receiving the most trauma cases of all Trauma Units in the region. In addition, Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH) receives those patients suffering from acute stroke with an active stroke thrombolysis service. Within GRH ED there is a dedicated Paediatric Emergency area that receives ill and injured children. Paediatric attendances constitute approximately 25% of all our attendances. There is Emergency Medicine Consultant supervision from 8am until midnight, seven days per week in GRH. CGH ED operates as an emergency department between 0800-2000 and as an MIIU between 2000-08000. CGH does receive emergency patients, after being screened by the Emergency Medicine consultant in charge, by ambulance until 8pm each day, after which the ambulance patients attend GRH.
